I am the designer and owner of Myriads by Melissa, a growing jewelry business. A business I started nearly ten years ago. I have always been a crafter and making things. My grandma started me on making things from a very young age. As long as I can remember, she was having me work on projects. Eventually, she had me making Christmas presents for me and my brother’s teachers, friends, and family to
help save our family money. If you are thinking of some kind of macaroni art or a stick figure out of popsicle sticks, you’re definitely really wrong. I was pouring candles, making wind spinners, and sewing hot pads. One of the biggest things I liked making were these plastic canvas wind spinners that were bright colors and very fun. I had made up a bunch for that year’s Christmas and still had extra. A friend of the family, who was a fellow crafter, took me with her to a craft show and I was selling my creations. I was about ten or twelve at the time. Yes, an entrepreneur at twelve. Shortly after I had finished high school, my grandma asked me for a favor. Of course, I asked her what she needed. She wanted me to make a pair of earrings to match a pendant she had been given. I had not made much more than some knotted friendship bracelets at that time. She said because I could make these wind spinners, I should be able to make her a pair of earrings. Grandma made a monster! I had some left over supplies and made up some other pieces. Some of the ladies at the church I was working at, at the time, also took interest. They asked me to make them some pieces. I did and they gave me money. That was CRAZY! I got so many compliments right off the bat. Some of them had home parties for me and wanted custom pieces. It literally exploded from there. Cut to me now! I am self-taught and self-built! I am constantly putting out amazing pieces and putting myself into each piece. A HUGE reason I love what I do is because I can make just about anything and make it special for anyone. Knowing that I can make someone excited about what I’m doing is the ultimate prize for me! I love that feeling when people are excited. It makes everything I do worth it.
