Let me show you the best portion of the diamond search field for finding magnetite at The Crater, and I'll show you a method that will increase your odds of finding magnetic rocks at this unique, state park. My wife, Cindy, found an amazing, magnetite specimen still embedded in the matrix. This black, opaque, lustrous mineral is an octahedron with an octahedron growing out of one of the faces. An octahedron is two, four-sided pyramids joined base-to-base. This is an amazing specimen she picked up while surface searching at Arkansas' Crater of Diamonds State Park. An octahedron is two, four-sided pyramids joined together at their bases. No matter how you turn or spin it, it looks the same from every angle. Amazingly, octahedrons occur in nature. Spinel and magnetite are both black, opaque, have octahedral shapes, and can be found at Arkansas' Crater of Diamonds State Park. Usually, they are very small, and you will find them loose in washed gravel.
My wife, Cindy, found this octahedral magnetite in situ (in its natural matrix) at the state park while surface searching. It is unique to find them in situ, but another amazing thing is that this octahedron has another octahedron growing out of one of it's 8 faces.

This is a LOT of rain for one day.

Almost 2 inches of rain yesterday!

Ned says we received almost half of an inch of rain here at the park in the last 24 hours. He is looking forward to doing his job possibly tonight and tomorrow. Norma doesn't have a weekly report. A curious Jr camper pulled her out of the ground and dumped her out. Norma says the ride in the loop the loop was fun!
