A little history for hoodoo heritage month…

Do you know the significance of blue bottle trees? Around 1600 B.C., glass bottles started making their way across Africa, Egypt, and Mesopotamia. The bottles were hung in a tree so that any evil spirits that tried to enter the house would get trapped inside. Some believed that the spirits remained alive inside the bottle, while others believed the rising of the sun would destroy the spirit.

Starting in the ninth century, people in the Congo began to include bottle trees into their folk magic. The practice of using bottle trees was brought to the Americas by African slaves in the 17th century.

It was at this period that African slaves in the South began hanging bottles from the branches of trees. Crepe myrtle trees were frequently used, a custom that may have originated with the myrtle tree's biblical association with slavery. The crepe myrtle tree is frequently used in the Old Testament to symbolize deliverance from captivity.
