Reminder: The names have been changed to protect the guilty!

On July 25, 2026 at a private residence near Franklin, TN, Lily and Richard were wed in the presence of friends and family at the home of a friend near Franklin, TN. I'm already ahead of myself...we actually started by playing welcome music as guests arrived and were served beverages in the large foyer of the house. The original idea was to have a violin and bass player on the front steps as people arrived and a trio in the back patio near the pool if guests wanted to go outside to await the beginning of the ceremony. Mother Nature saw to it that the best laid plans of mice and men oft go astray. It was raining when we all pulled up. The bass player was nowhere to be seen because of a tragic end for his dog at home causing him to forget he had a job. I called him to see what was happening and it was decided that if he made it to the reception, that would be the best, which is what happened. The violinist, Craig Duncan, then stayed in the foyer playing tunes while the trio was supposed to open the doors and let the music drift into the foyer as nobody seemed interested in going out in the heat. Unfortunately people kept closing the doors even as we got up and opened them again to the point where it was silly for us to play for ourselves. Jocelyn Sprouse and I decided then to go join Craig to play tunes for the guests while we stood on steps a little above the crowd.

At a signal from the coordinator, we decamped to a wooded area next to the house where chairs were set up for the guests for the ceremony. Several of the caterers helped wipe off the chairs and we began to play music to welcome guests to the ceremony area. We played "The Luckiest", "The Prayer", "Forrest Gump Theme" and "Amazing Grace" as guests filed in. Processionals began with 3 sets of attendants along with a "ring dog" entering to Canon in D. The bride soon made her way to the altar to "Turning Page" from the Twilight series. In the middle of the ceremony the quartet was asked to play "Oceans" as a contemplation for the guests. Vows and rings exchanged, prayers offered and at last the newlyweds and guests made their way to the reception to Coldplay's "Viva la Vida".

The quartet returned to the patio where bassist, Roy Vogt, was waiting and ready to add his expertise to the rest of the evening. The next three hours went by so fast. We started playing contemporary pop songs such as "So This Is Love", "It's a Beautiful Day", "Stand By Me" and "The Way You Look" before taking a short dinner break. We came back and kicked the music into high gear playing high energy Rock and Roll. The guests had a great time dancing and singing along with the songs we played. Having a bass player is always a treat for us as we played songs such as "Rolling In the Deep", "Shut Up and Dance", "Billie Jean", "Wagon Wheel", "Crush", "Cosmic Love" and "Brown Eyed Girl". A good time was had by all --including us!

Congratulations to Lily and Richard from Silver Strings! We wish you much happiness in everything you do!

Reminder: The names have been changed to protect the guilty!

On June 27, 2026 Opal exchanged vows with Steven at the Hillsboro Church of Christ. They chose hymns and songs of encouragement for the prelude. I have to tell a story here on myself. Many, many years ago I performed in a quartet for the first wedding of my career at another Church of Christ in Nashville. I had no music at the time, throwing together piano music and whatever I could find for the prelude and processionals. I didn’t know what appropriate dress was for a wedding at the time so I thought this hideous pink knit long dress with a geometric pattern on it would do nicely. (Ouch!) We got paid the princely sum of $25 apiece. The reason I bring this up is that at the time the Church of Christ didn’t allow instrumental music in the church. The bride told the elders that if she couldn’t have a quartet playing music for her wedding, she was going to have her wedding at another church that allowed instrumental music. The elders relented as there was no reason whatsoever to forbid instrumental music for a wedding. Things have changed just a little since then.

But I digress….After playing hymns such as “Come Thou Fount”, “Holy, Holy, Holy” and “In Christ Alone” we brought the grandmothers and mothers as well as Steven’s grandfather who was to do the marrying, to their places to “Be Thou My Vision”. Next came the wedding party entrance to the Lonesome Dove theme for the men and “Canon in D” for the women and four flower girls. Opal chose “Goodness of God” for her entrance. Prayers, readings, vows and ring exchange accomplished, the minister pronounced the couple as husband and wife and presented Mr. and Mrs. to the guests. We swept everyone back up the aisle to “Meryton Townhall”.

Silver Strings congratulates this couple with wishes for them to have a wonderful life together full of joy and laughter!

On 6/18/26 a trio of Silver Strings met at the Founders Hall in the Schermerhorn Symphony Center to be a part of a surprise engagement. When we got there, several people were still setting the stage with placing and lighting 104 (count ’em) candles in a circle in the center of the main room. We set up in a corner opposite the side where the couple was expected to enter the circle. Randall, the suitor, had requested that we be playing love songs as they approached the Hall.

On a signal we began playing “To Make You Feel My Love” and soon a very confused and lovely Camille entered the room followed by Randall. They entered the circle of candles and began dancing and kept dancing as we played “Can’t Help Falling In Love With You”. Randall had requested a couple of songs that I arranged especially for this event and as we played “Heaven” by Brian Adams, Randall dropped to one knee and asked for her had in marriage. The answer was, of course, YES!! He produced the little box that held the ring and they both dissolved into tears. We launched into Bruno Mars’ “Marry You” as they embraced. More dancing ensued as we played another request, that of “Run” by George Strait followed by “At Last”, “All of Me” by John Legend and several more love songs while they danced some more. Soon it was time for them to dash to their dinner reservation which turned out to be on a paddle boat on the Cumberland River where friends waited to congratulate them and get on with the celebration.

We musicians look forward to these off-the-beaten-path events. Amber Arthur, director of events at the Schermerhorn, did a fabulous job of pulling this proposal rabbit out of the hat. It was a huge success all around.

Reminder: The names have been changed to protect the guilty!

On 6/13/26 a quartet was assembled for a wedding/reception booked by colleague, Craig Duncan. The players put Jocelyn Sprouse up to driving to a rural farm in White Bluff, TN. Toni Ferguson, trooper that she is, had just had foot surgery and would normally have insisted on driving, but allowed the rest of the quartet to help her hobble to where we needed to be. GPS miraculously found the location, taking us off the highway to twisting dirt roads that seemed to run through other people’s properties. At a fork in the road we stopped to ask a guy driving a bush hog if he might know where we needed to go. Turns out he was the groom and of course he knew where we needed to be. We pulled up to a freshly mowed field with a spreading oak tree where the ceremony was to take place. We were even able to drive right up to the chairs set for the quartet and move Toni to her chair.

This couple had been married to each other before, got divorced amicably, then quite a few years later decided to remarry. The groom showed up at the last minute all cleaned up and ready to get married….again. We started off the prelude with light classics and pretty songs, and played until we were signaled to begin “Can’t Help Falling in Love” for the bride and a couple of their kids who stood up with them. The service was short and sweet after which we played “Here Comes the Sun” to send everybody off to the reception which was held at another location on the farm.

We made our way to the tent set up in another freshly mowed field and played mostly classic rock songs including “Kashmir”, “Never My Love”, “Happy Together”, “Black Dog”, “Nights in White Satin”, “Hallelujah”….all my personal favorites since I was close to this couple’s ages. Definitely my pleasure to be a part of this wedding. Toni soldiered through the entire 3 hours we were on those hillsides. I’ll say it again, “what a trooper”!

Congratulations to the reunited couple!

On 5/24/26 Leila married her sweetheart, Jason, at CJ’s Off the Square in Franklin, TN. For the prelude the couple expressed their faith with a selection of hymns and classics. They chose songs like “Blessed Assurance”, “Come Thou Fount”, “How Deep the Father’s Love For Us”, “Spring” from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and “The Prayer”. Processionals began with Bach’s “Sheep May Safely Graze” for the grandmothers and mothers, followed by Pachelbel’s “Canon in D” for the wedding party. Leila chose “Goodness of God” for her entrance. When all were assembled the officiant led the couple through their vows and ring exchange. The lighting a unity candle followed accompanied by the trio playing “Be Thou My Vision”. After final prayer was said and then the presentation of the newlyweds as Mr. and Mrs., the trio sent the happy couple back up the aisle to the chorus of “The Greatest Showman”.

Time to party! The trio figuratively put on their party hats to play fun, contemporary favorites such as “Enchanted”, “Wildest Dreams”, “Joker and the Queen”, “Meryton Town Hall”, “Everlasting Love” and “Viva La Vida”. CJ’s, as always, set the reception beautifully. I’m always amazed at how varied the place settings, colors and menus are, not to mention how flawlessly CJ’s team works to make everything flow like clockwork. We musicians love having complete confidence that the timing of the music is aided by their total attention to detail. CJ’s is definitely our favorite venue!

Congratulations are now in order for Leila, Jason and their families! Silver Strings wishes them a long and loving marriage replete with many adventures and much joy!

Reminder: The names have been changed to protect the guilty!

On May 23rd, 2026 Silver Strings dashed from a wedding in Nashville earlier in the afternoon in Nashville to Homestead Manor near Spring Hill. In the yard in front of the Manor, Allison and Mark were wed in the presence of friends and family. The trio played hymns for the prelude such as “Come Thou Fount”, “Be Thou My Vision”, “In Christ Alone” and “As the Deer”. When the time came for the processionals, the trio played “Edelweiss” for two mothers and four grandmothers. Next came the wedding party of 8 bridesmaids and 8 men and 1 baby to “Blessed Assurance”. For the bride we played a mashup of the “Canon in D” with “You Are My Sunshine”. Vows recited, rings exchanged, the couple then shared their first Communion together while the trio played “I Love You Lord”. Soon we swept the newlyweds to their new life together to the strains of “Signed, Sealed, Delivered”.

What was such an honor for me with this wedding was that a couple of years ago, my trio played for the wedding of this bride’s brother. When I saw the brother before wedding began, he was holding his beautiful one year old daughter in his arms. What a delight!

Time to congratulate Allison and Mark on this important rite of passage. May they have a happy and fulfilling marriage all the days of their lives!

Reminder: The names have been changed to protect the guilty!

On May 23rd, and this was the third time this month Silver Strings played for a wedding at Assumption, William and Maria were wed with a full Catholic Mass along with the Schola performing Gregorian Chant during parts of the service. The Schola is stunning in it’s delivery. It was a great pleasure for us to be able to just sit and let the beautiful sounds of the members’ singing wash over us. For our part during the prelude, the Silver Strings quartet played both the Bach/Gounod and the Schubert “Ave Maria”, the Mozart “Alleluia”, The Pachelbel “Canon in D” and the Delibes “Flower Duet” from Lakme.

We began the processionals with the Bach “Air” from the Suite in D for the two mothers as well as the wedding party. Maria had chosen the Charpentier “Te Deum” for her entrance. As there has been ongoing construction on the church to repair tornado damage to the bell tower, the front door is not being used so that Maria had secreted herself behind a screen set up toward the back of the sanctuary so she could still make her entrance down the center aisle. Her groom was instructed not to look up until a signal was given to him to raise his head to see his bride approaching. The couple was married first thing and then sat down while the Mass was carried out in Latin. When the priest finally said, “Go in Peace” in English, the quartet began the Brandenburg Concerto #3 for the recessional after which we played the Handel “Hornpipe” from the Water Music as a postlude.

Congratulations to William and Maria and their families! Silver Strings wishes the happy couple a long and loving marriage!

Reminder: The names have been changed to protect the guilty!

On 5/16/26 at the historic Church of the Assumption in Germantown, Barbara and her beloved, Mark, were wed in a beautiful Catholic ceremony. Silver Strings was a quartet this time, playing music from the classical repertoire including the Mozart “Alleluja”, the Bach “Air from the Suite in D”, Brandenburg Concerto #2 and the “Concerto for Two Violins” second movement for the prelude. For the mothers and grandmothers we played another Bach composition “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring”. Following this was the Delibes “Flower Duet” for the wedding party. Finally the bride chose the Pachelbel “Canon in D” for her entrance, with her groom being signaled to raise his eyes to see her approaching at a specific place in the Canon. Very dramatic! As the church has been under construction for several years after severe damage from a tornado, the processionals were a little complicated due to the necessity of having to go down a side aisle, cross over to the middle aisle before the procession to the altar.

The marriage ceremony included the Mass which has many parts including Communion for all guests for which the quartet played both the Schubert “Ave Maria” and the Gounod “Ave Maria”. This Mass was conducted in Latin so that the quartet had to depend on the coordinator for the church to let us know when to play. Finally the priest announced to the audience in English to “go in Peace” which was our sign to begin the recessional of the familiar Mendelssohn “Wedding March”.

Congratulations to Barbara and Mark! Silver Strings wishes them a long and happy life together full of love and adventure!

On 5/16/26 Toni and Adam exchanged vows in the beautiful garden at CJ’s Off the Square in Franklin, TN. Harpist, Phyllis Sparks, provided the music for their ceremony. Toni had asked for a mix of classical and contemporary music that included some songs from the Bridgerton series. She chose a stately Handel piece called “Passacaile” for the entrance of the mothers, followed by “Mystery of Love” for the men, maids and a 27 year old “flower boy”. Toni was then escorted to her groom to the redolent sounds of “Cosmic Love” (by Florence and the Machine). Since Phyllis assured me that the wedding went off perfectly, I assume that vows were recited and rings were exchanged. Finally Phyllis sent them back down the aisle to the ever popular “Signed, Sealed, Delivered”.

It was honor to assist Toni and Adam with their wedding music and congratulations are in order for their marriage. May they have a very many happy years together!!

Reminder: The names have been changed to protect the guilty!

On the 15th of May, 2026, a trio of Silver Strings brought music to the nuptials of Kathy and Robert at the lovely Sycamore Farms’ “marrying pavilion” overlooking a fountain bedecked pond. The prelude began with the theme from “Forrest Gump” and continued with “Can’t Help Falling In Love”, “Hallelujah”, “To Make You Feel My Love” and “The Prayer”. When the time came the parents and wedding party entered to “Stand By Me” after which Kathy made her grand entrance to the beautiful “Canon in D” by Pachelbel.

Vows recited, rings exchanged, the newlyweds made their way back up the aisle to “Signed, Sealed, Delivered”, a three word title that summed up the simple ceremony in style. Soon the guests were making their way back to the reception barn to start the rest of the celebration. Silver Strings joined them to play selections such as “All of Me”, “Enchanted”, “Wildest Dreams”, “At Last”, “Just the Way You Are” and “The Joker and the Queen”. A shout out to the skill and expert guidance of planner/coordinator, Bruce Pittman. He always makes our job so much easier.

Congratulations are in order to Kathy, Robert and their families. Silver Strings wishes them much love and happiness in their newly established family!
