Finally made it to the Franklin Mineral Museum for one of their Night Digs this past Saturday!

This has been on my list for quite a while, and I’m glad we finally made the trip. Once it gets dark, you head out with your UV lights and start searching for fluorescent minerals.

There was plenty of material to pick through, and we came home with some really neat pieces. We found lots of fluorescent calcite and willemite, along with franklinite and other Franklin-area minerals. Seeing everything light up under UV out in the field is a completely different experience than looking at specimens inside a display case.

We also had a chance to check out the Franklin Mineral Museum, and of course their fluorescent mineral displays did not disappoint.

Definitely a fun trip for anyone who enjoys minerals, UV collecting, or just getting out and digging through some rocks!

And just a reminder, Cobble Creek Mining Co. will be open next Monday, October 12, from 10 AM to 5 PM while many local schools are off.

The mining sluice will be up and running, and we’ll also be cracking open geodes throughout the day!

Stop on by, dig for some rocks, crack open a geode, and check out some cool minerals and fossils with us.

SCHOOL’S OUT: FALL ROCK & FOSSIL DAY AT COBBLE CREEK

We’re trying something a little different this year!

Since many local schools are off, we’re opening for a special one-day event just for the occasion.

Bring the kids out for a hands-on day at Cobble Creek Mining Co.

Crack open a geode starting at $5! See what’s hiding inside and take home your own piece of the experience.

Get your hands dirty at the mining sluice with a Classic Cobble Creek Mining Bucket for $10 + tax and dig for gems, minerals, and fossils.

Bring a friend, bring the family, and spend part of the day doing something a little different while school is out.

If you’re looking for a fun, hands-on activity for the kids, come see us Monday and let them dig in!

Today’s the day! Our September Open House starts at 10 AM!

We’ve spent the month sharing sneak peeks, and now it’s time to see everything in person! From the beautiful banded agates pictured here to new minerals, fossils, and carvings, there’s plenty to explore inside Cobble Creek.

Here’s a look at some of this month’s new arrivals:

• Moroccan agates with beautiful banding and eye patterns
• Blue and yellow fluorites, including specimens with sparkling druzy quartz
• Honey and cream dogtooth calcites
• Baryte and chunky vanadinite specimens from Morocco
• Small vivianite specimens from Brazil
• Quartz with natural iron oxide coatings

The weekend is here! The weather might not look too appealing, but we’ll have our own rays of sunshine inside Cobble Creek!

These new dogtooth calcite specimens will be on display for our September Open House. With warm honey and creamy colors, pointed crystals, and plenty of sparkle, they’re worth a closer look.

We have so many new minerals available this month. Come stop by, say hello, and check out some new rocks!

I’ve seen plenty of fluorite under UV light, but these new pieces really surprised me!

Under longwave UV, they pop purple with hot pink phantoms nested inside one another. You can see the outlines repeating within the crystals, and I haven’t seen anything quite like these before!

It’s really tough to capture their true colors in photos. The hot pink is so much more striking in person! Make sure you ask us to see these under UV tomorrow at our September Open House. I’m really excited to show them off!

If you love minerals with interesting crystal shapes, check out these tabular baryte specimens!

Broad, flat faces, overlapping layers, and shades ranging from smoky gray to warm brown make these fun pieces to explore up close. Look around the edges, and you’ll notice some lovely translucency, too.

These will be available this weekend at our September Open House, along with plenty of other finds throughout the shop.

The September Open House previews continue with Vivianite from Brazil!

I’ve been getting these small specimens ready for the weekend, and there are some great details in this group. Dark, lustrous crystal faces, visible ridges, and patches of deep green give each piece a little something different.

If you enjoy browsing the smaller mineral specimens, be sure to take a look at these when you visit!

The closer you look, the more you’ll notice!

We’ll have these quartz specimens with iron oxide coatings available at this weekend’s September Open House. Clusters of quartz points feature earthy reddish-brown tones, with scattered patches of bright green malachite and deep blue azurite.

Each piece has its own mix of crystals, textures, and colors. Which of these would you pick for your collection?
