It is an absolutely beautiful day out, and today is the final day of our May Open House. The mining sluice is up and running, and our tables are fully loaded with incredible pieces. Come on out and spend your Sunday with us!

Lots of new gems, minerals, and crystals out on the tables this month. Come on by and see what you can find!

Ugh! we did have a little over 10 lbs arrive broken in this batch. Painful. But plenty of whole ones made it through, as you can see in the video.

Fresh restock of honey and clear calcite spheres just put out for the weekend. I’m always a sucker for the internal fractures on these. When the light hits right, you get flashes and reflections deep inside the stone.

Tomorrow’s the day! Lots of new material out for May, the weather is looking great, and the mining sluice will be up and running with the classic mining buckets for the kiddos of all ages.

Saving these for Saturday. We've got a small batch of Okorusu Fluorite coming out for the May Open House: 8 smaller pieces, and that's all we're putting out, so first come, first served on these beauties.

Okorusu is one of those classic fluorite localities (Otjozondjupa Region, Namibia) that collectors chase for the color zoning. These ones are tough to shoot. In ambient light, they can look almost solid black. Hit them with direct sun or an LED backlight, and the greens and purples come right through. The photos do not do them justice, which is part of why we wanted to show them in person.

Look at these pyrite cubes. Sharp edges, perfect right angles, sitting right in the matrix, and nobody cut or shaped them. They grow like this. These come from the famous deposits in Navajún, in the La Rioja region of Spain, which is the spot for cubic pyrite.

This one's a larger display piece, really meant to anchor a collection. These are multiple photos of the same piece showing it from different angles. But if you want something smaller, we've got pieces in the matrix too. Just ask us; they're tucked away in our back room.

This exact piece hits the shop THIS weekend at our May Open House.

Weather's looking great, so it's a good excuse to get out of the house. We'll have the sluice running all weekend, so come dig up some treasures of your own.

We picked up another batch of Herkimer Diamonds. They're actually naturally double-terminated quartz crystals from Herkimer County, New York. We'll have a mix of pieces still in the matrix and loose crystals.

Some are the water-clear quartz this location is famous for, but honestly, my favorites are the imperfect ones. A little black hydrocarbon inclusion (anthraxolite), some iron staining, and a bit of character in the crystal. That stuff makes them more interesting to me.

They're far from perfect, but they're really neat examples from one of the most famous quartz localities in the country, if not the world.

Like this one. Heavy fluorite eagle carving with deep purple banding, and the way the light hits those internal fractures is something else.

If you like odd and unique-looking specimens, this one is for you. I was immediately drawn to this piece.

It’s a crazy Calcite with Marcasite specimen out of the Fletcher Mine in Reynolds Co., Missouri. The structure on this one is wild. This thing seriously looks like it was pulled straight off another planet, and it is honestly one of those pieces you just have to turn around in your hands to fully appreciate.

I’ll have this guy out on display for our next open house!

Okay, this one's a beast. A huge Septarian nodule out of Utah came in for our May Open House.

Normal light, it's already great. That bright yellow calcite is cutting through the dark brown aragonite. Then you put a long-wave UV light on it, and the center goes full greenish-yellow. Swipe, and you'll see what we mean.

There's only the one. So if a UV-reactive piece has been on your list, this is the kind of thing you want to see in person, glow and all.
