Chasing Classic Clocks! Episode 5. "Hyde and Seek!"

Still on our clock tour of the Northeast U.S. Today finds us at Hyde Hall near Cooperstown, NY. (The same family as in Hyde Park). Overlooking one of the finger lakes, this Regency style neoclassical country mansion was constructed starting in 1817. 5 generations of the Clarke family made this their home. This home claims to be the first big mansion in the country. All of the mansions that came afterwards have been compared to Hyde Hall. Unlike Jefferson's home at Monticello, 70% of the contents are original. They have a wonderful collection of original, working clocks! One is greeted on the front hall by a wonderful Scottish Drum clock. Enjoy the photo tour!

Chasing Classic Clocks! Episode 4 "The Hills Are Alive"!

Today, I found myself in Stowe, Vermont.......not skiing, but visiting the Von Trapp family lodge, where I noticed this beauty! It's a signed Daniel Quare English clock. Quare was best know for inventing a repeating watch movement in 1690. This clock was made sometime after that!

The clock was not working, and of course I asked about it....(now is the really interesting part).....I was told that it was Captain von Trapp’s grandfather clock! Yes....the real Captain from The Sound of Music.....just sitting there on the stairs in the lodge. Their original house burnt down in 1980, but the clock was in a barn and was saved! After explaining who I was, they led me over to inspect it. No pendulum, and the weights resting on the floor behind it. I did not pull the movement out. I was told that they were quoted $10,000 to repair it! They asked what I would charge. Unfortunately, I'm only here for another day.....so, someone get up there and get it running! By the way, the Captain and Maria are buried together on the property (along with many of the kids). Did you know that after the Captain's seven kids, he and Maria had three more. Only the last child is alive and is 87 years old!

Visited Monticello today. I'm always interested in the clocks. Jefferson designed the clock above his main doorway. It's double sided, showing just the hour on the outside. The weights are cannonballs which hang on each side and go through the floor in order for it to run for a week. (Notice how the rope for the weights exit straight out on each side of the case and then down along the wall). It has to be wound using a ladder to reach the winding ports in the face of the dial. It was made in Philadelphia to Jefferson's design. The other clocks now in the house are replacements as everything in his home was sold to repay his debts after he died. The only clock working when I visited was the tall case clock made in Philadelphia. The other clocks are all French.

Chasing Classic Clocks! Episode 3. "Tiffany Clocks and Tiffany Lamps"

In this episode, we chased to Atlanta for this beautiful French Boulle style clock and pedestal, sold by Tiffany & Company! Like many lamps in the Tiffany style, this was not made by Tiffany....but made for Tiffany. Made in Italy, this wooden, marquetry inlaid clock case contains a Hermle German clock movement. The matching pedestal is unusual that it contains a glass door with shelves. Although not really old, this clock was made in the style of master cabinet maker, Andre Charles Boulle (1642-1732). It is now available here in our shop in Blairsville, Georgia.

Chasing Classic Clocks! Episode 2. "Did I Sneeze?"

New in the shop this week is this German Gründerzeit style (a late 19th-century Historicist architecture and decor style that heavily incorporates Renaissance Revival and Baroque Revival architecture elements) open well floor clock. At 88" tall, this would be an impressive piece in any decor. We chased to Dalton, Georgia for this beauty. The case is in perfect condition and contains a German Urgos 3/12A Triple Chime movement with a silence option. The dial glass is broken along with weight shells that will be replaced. Inspected and serviced, it will be available in our showroom next week!

Hello friends! It's always fun to walk in on a service call and find one of these! Gazo clocks were made by the Gazo Family Clock Factory in Southern California from 1972 to 1989, starting as an antique repair shop before evolving into a maker of luxury, hand-carved wooden timepieces. Total production reached around 10,000 units across 53 models, featuring high-end German mechanical movements paired with ornate, artisan-crafted solid hardwood cases. This one has a Kieninger movement.....weirdly with no movement ID on the back plate?

Happy Birthday! Happy Independence Day! 250 years of freedom for families far and wide. Kathy's family fought in the Revolutionary war for your freedoms. My family immigrated in 1904......hoping to flee persecution for opportunity and the freedoms that America offered. They escaped two world wars in Poland that may have ended all of their lives and futures. Celebrate what we all have as citizens of this great country!

Chasing Classic Clocks! Episode One. "Bonjour"

Hello to this beautiful Ridgeway, in the French Provincial style, from 1999. We chased to Maryville, TN for this one. After a deep cleaning, (and I mean deep) and servicing......she runs magnificently! I don't know how many they made.....but I love this one! Waiting for new weight shells, as these had some corrosion......and a new piece of glass to replace the missing glass in front of the dial. It'll soon join the other cool clocks in our showroom.
