This diamond was grown in a lab, in just a few weeks.
A lab-grown diamond is real diamond: the same carbon crystal as a mined diamond, with the same chemical, physical, and optical properties. There are two main ways to grow one.
HPHT (high pressure, high temperature): a tiny diamond seed goes into a powerful press with carbon and a molten metal solvent, and carbon crystallizes onto the seed.
CVD (chemical v***r deposition): diamond seed plates sit in a vacuum chamber with methane and hydrogen. Microwaves turn the gas into a glowing plasma, and carbon builds up on the seeds layer by layer over several weeks. Many CVD stones are treated after growth to improve their color.
After that, the rough is planned, sawn, shaped, faceted, and polished just like a mined diamond. Then a lab such as IGI or GIA grades it. The report number is often laser inscribed on the girdle, and the report states that the stone is lab-grown.
Can you tell by eye? No. It takes specialized lab equipment, and a basic diamond tester reads both as diamond.
A few tips before you buy:
Always get the grading report, and verify the report number online.
Compare price per carat, not just the total price.
