jade is tough, not indestructible. and most people worry about the wrong things.

the real risk is impact. it survives a drop on carpet and shatters on tile. take a bangle off for the gym, for moving furniture, for washing up in a stone sink.

the second is sudden heat. not warmth, but the jump: hot water onto a cold stone, a sauna, a hair dryer held close.

chemicals are mostly a metal problem. perfume and chlorine dull gold plating long before they touch the stone. spray first, jewellery second.

what is fine: water, sweat, mild soap, sleeping in it. daily wear does nothing bad to jade and quite a lot that is good.

most jade that breaks breaks in a drawer, knocking against other pieces. on your wrist it is padded by you.

in chinese jade, the shape is not decoration. it is the message.

平安扣, the peace buckle. a disc with a hole through it, descended from the ancient 璧. worn for safe passage, on a journey, a first job, a move to another country.

玉镯, the bangle. sized to go on once and stay on, which is why getting it over the knuckle is a whole ritual. it is meant to be worn unbroken, for years.

葫芦, the gourd. a vessel with a narrow neck. good fortune goes in and does not come back out.

长命锁, the longevity lock. tied on a newborn to lock the child to this world.

无事牌, the plain plaque. no carving at all, no dragon, no flower, nothing. the name means no incident, and that is the whole wish. may nothing happen to you.

the most elaborate piece in the tradition says less than the one left blank.
