A labor of love, literally & figuratively. ❤️ My heart pendant.🫀 I created this charm as a gift to myself for my 30th birthday. Ultimately, I wanted to make something that represented my heart that had the look & feel of a vintage coin. I did some research on heart motifs and took inspiration from the Sacred Heart. Although I have no personal connection to this icon, the idea of swords puncturing the heart and making it leak felt beautiful & grotesque, and I wanted to recreate that energy in my own way.
I started by free handing orbs that mimicked the shape of a human heart. 🫀 Within that orb, I configured garnets to come together in a traditional heart shape (❤️). For the droplets, marquise cut citrines. I love the range of tonality in citrines so I pulled different sizes & shades and messed around until I landed on a perfect formation of my red heart & blood droplets. ❤️🩸
From there, my incredible CAD designer immediately understood my vision and was even able to translate that worn texture (that makes it feel like a vintage coin) imprinted on the whole slab. This is a technique usually only done by hand, so it was gratifying to see it come through digitally.
Next, to casting. I had the urge to check the wax before pressing go since this was a piece I could only envision in my head and needed to make sure it felt right. And right it was. Better than my imagination.
I went with 18k gold, my first piece in 18 instead of 14; it needed to look extra yellow. I found a stone setter that was brave enough to accept this project. Setting colored stones is difficult, but then onto a flat surface.. extra difficult. He did so masterfully and literally in one day. I was in awe of his incredible feat.
The weight on this piece is something else. It’s a heavy reminder of all the little droplets my heart has pumped, and still it persists. It’s love and loss and love again. And again. Now I wear my heart on my chest, dangling right next to the real thing. Sometimes I feel unworthy of such a heavenly monstrosity. But then I remember you can’t be unworthy of something that is already yours. ❤️
