December has three beautiful birthstones, all carrying their own unique hue of the color blue.

is a semi-translucent-to-opaque gem that ranges from blue to green and often has dark veins. Previously produced in New Mexico, today most of the U.S. production of turquoise can be found in Arizona and Nevada. The Kingman mine in Arizona is a historically important source that is known for producing intense blue turquoise. This birthstone is considered a national treasure in Tibet, where it is believed to grant health, good fortune, and protection from evil.

is often described as velvety because of its deep and saturated color, ranging from pure, rich blue to violet. Tanzanite can be found in northern Tanzania, the only place on earth where tanzanite is mined commercially. This stone is a 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness and is best in a protective mounting to avoid abrasion. The blue variety of Tanzanite is considered the most valuable, and is the chosen gem for a 24th wedding anniversary.

comes in a wide variety of attractive colors, and the Blue Zircon is often found near major sapphire sources. This December birthstone can be found in Sri Lanka, Australia, Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia. Victorians had a fondness for blue zircon, with some of the most valuable specimens of this gem found in English estate jewelry from the 1880s.

What makes stand out? Very few gemstones can match tourmaline’s dazzling array of colors! Colors vary from vibrant pink and red rubellites to emerald green chrome tourmalines and neon green to blue-to-violet Paraiba. Tourmalines even appear in a bold black variation; there is simply a color for every occasion.

Tourmaline has a hardness rating of 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, making it perfect for everyday wear. This gemstone can handle light and most chemicals, but watch out for heat – it can cause damage! Fun fact: Tourmaline gets electrically charged when heated and even exhibits piezoelectricity when squeezed!

The September birthstone traditionally symbolized faithfulness and nobility, fitting because for centuries this gem was a staple in royalty and clergy attire.

One of the most famous sapphires out there is the dazzling Rockefeller Sapphire. This stunning 62.02-carat rectangular step-cut sapphire originated in Myanmar (Burma). In 1934, the legendary John D. Rockefeller Jr. acquired this stone after it was owned by an Indian Maharaja(Hindu prince ranking above a raja).

Kashmir, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar (Burma) are prominent sources of sapphire gemstones. This gem has also been discovered in notable amounts in Australia, Thailand, Cambodia, Madagascar, and the United States (Montana), along with various other countries across Asia and Africa. The Sapphire birthstone is durable, scoring an impressive 9 on the Mohs scale! It exhibits transcendent toughness and is free from cleavage, meaning it won't easily break upon impact, making this stone a perfect gem choice for everyday jewelry.

is one of the three birthstones for August, followed by Spinel and Sardonyx. Throughout history, Peridot oftentimes was mistaken for other gemstones such as Topaz and Emerald. To add to this confusion, The Red Sea island of Topazios, the alleged origin of the name “topaz,” actually produced the Peridot gemstone.

Today most Peridot originates from China, Myanmar, Pakistan, Tanzania, Vietnam, and the United States. The main source of this gemstone in the United States is Arizona. The beauty this gemstone holds is figuratively and physically out of this world since it appears in Pallasite Meteorites.
