Sapphire? Spinel? Or something entirely unexpected?

8 out of 9 people who saw this gemstone in person couldn’t identify it. And trust us, some of them really know their gemstones.

That electric blue. Those hypnotic flashes. The kind of colour that makes you question everything you thought you knew about blue gemstones.

At first glance, you’d swear it was a fine sapphire. Look again, and you might find yourself thinking spinel.

The plot twist? It’s a TOURMALINE.

Yes, a blue tourmaline with a colour so striking, it had even experienced eyes second-guessing themselves.

A little reminder that Mother Nature doesn’t always play by the rules. Sometimes, the most extraordinary gemstones are the ones that refuse to be easily identified.

A spectrum of Red.

From deep crimson to vivid ruby red, electric pink and fiery orange, every stone tells a different story through its color, cut and relationship with light.

For us, the beauty begins long before the final polish. We look for the right rough, study how light moves through it, and then let the stone guide the cut.

Because sometimes, the most extraordinary thing about a gemstone is not how red it is, but which red it becomes.

A little bit of ruby, a little bit of something entirely its own.

Meet our Trinity Cut Afghan Rubellite, a shape we created to bring together the elegance of a heart with the clean geometry of a three sided design.

What really caught our eye is the combination of rich red color, high clarity and that beautiful full lustre. It has the kind of glow that makes you look at it twice, and honestly, it can give a fine ruby some serious competition.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about seeing a stone like this come together once the right cut meets the right rough.

The polishing wheel.
A gemstone doesn’t reveal its true character the moment it comes off the faceting machine. The final polish is where precision, patience, and experience come together.

At the polishing wheel, a carefully selected diamond abrasive is used to refine each facet, removing microscopic surface imperfections and creating the smooth, reflective surface responsible for a gemstone’s luster, brilliance, and light return.

For colored gemstones, polishing is especially important. The wrong pressure, speed, or polishing compound can create scratches, orange peel, drag lines, or even damage delicate material. Every stone responds differently depending on its hardness, crystal structure, cleavage, and composition.

This is where lapidary becomes more than cutting stone. It becomes an exercise in understanding light.

At Maison Emeer, our approach to gemstones extends beyond sourcing. We experiment, cut, facet, and polish in-house, constantly refining our techniques to bring out the character that already exists within the rough.

Rough → Facet → Polish → Brilliance.

The stone does the reflecting.
The lapidary creates the conditions for it to shine.

This 5.84 gram Afghan Lagoon Tourmaline rough crystal displays that highly sought after Lagoon color: a vivid, glowing blend of neon bluish green that seems to light up from within.

What makes Lagoon Tourmaline so special is the delicate balance between blue and green. In the finest material, the two hues merge into an electric, almost tropical glow rather than separating into distinct zones.

This crystal is completely rough, meaning the real challenge is still ahead: studying the crystal, understanding its natural zoning and inclusions, and deciding how to orient the cut to preserve as much of that incredible color as possible.

And that is what makes exceptional rough so exciting. The finished gem is only half the story. The other half is knowing what the crystal is trying to become.
