Dear Basketball Diary:
When I was a kid in the ’70s, my dad would now and then bring me, my sister, and brother to MSG. One day we saw Clyde standing near his Rolls-Royce, draped in a magnificent fur. To my young eyes, it was as if a larger-than-life mystical figure had materialized before me. Based on my dad’s demeanor, I thought we were witnessing the arrival of a king. With stars in his eyes, my dad shook Walt Frazier’s hand, and from that day on, I was smitten by Clyde’s inimitable sense of style.
I also loved the way my dad would enunciate “Earl the Pearl Monroe” — as if “the Pearl” emphasized the preciousness of the man himself.
I lived through the KNICKS championship years of 1970 and ’73. Also in those days, a popular jewelry item was the stacking bead bracelet. Last night at our family watch party, I kept calm and sketched on… The image of my father looking at Clyde as though a king had arrived stays with me. And now, to honor my basketball memories, I’m sharing a working page from my victory game sketchbook.
