Shelf placement is the part most people skip, and it’s the part that decides whether a system holds.
We zone by frequency of use. The most-used items sit between hip and shoulder height, where you can see and reach them without bending or stretching. Backstock and occasional-use items go above and below that range. Here that meant paper goods and entertaining supplies up top, everyday snacks at kid height so the children can serve themselves, and bulk drinks on the floor where the weight belongs.
Shelf heights were adjusted to fit the categories instead of the other way around, which cuts out the dead air above each bin and gives you more usable storage without adding a single shelf. Every bin is a set size for its category. When it’s full, you’re stocked. That’s your restock signal and your limit in one.
Clear, front-facing containers keep everything visible, so older items get used first and nothing expires in the back corner.
Good organizing looks simple because the thinking happened before anything went on a shelf.
