Before the hair tutorial, there was the flipbook.
When I began designing hairpins, I discovered that making them beautiful and comfortable was only part of the challenge. Teaching someone to use one—at the back of her own head—required a little invention, too.
My solution involved three illustrated flipbooks, a SoHo gallery transformed into a bo***ir, and a party filled with hairpins, French w**e and women waiting for an updo.
In “The Art of the Twist,” I share the story behind those little books—and why helping a woman discover what she can do herself has always been part of my design process.

“You can’t clap with one hand,” my grandmother used to say.
I thought of her often while writing my latest Substack story, Good Company. It’s about joining the CFDA, coming together with other accessories designers when our work was disappearing from fashion pages, and discovering how much we could accomplish for one another—and for a cause beyond our businesses.
From an exhibition near Bryant Park to the White House, and later to creating accessories for Michael Kors’s runway shows, those relationships changed the course of my career.
My grandmother was right. The people beside you make all the difference.

THE PONYTAIL GUIDE

The ponytail has moved far beyond the gym.
