Access Virginia to expand open captioning and audio description services to Williamsburg thanks to grant from Williamsburg Community Foundation ().
September 28, 2021, Newport News, VA - With the return of live theater performances on Broadway and elsewhere, Access Virginia is ready to provide accommodations that make it possible for deaf and blind theatergoers to experience the wonder and excitement of live entertainment in the Greater Williamsburg area. Funding from Williamsburg Community Foundation will allow Access Virginia to expand their services into this region.
Since 2014 Access Virginia, a 501(c)3 non-profit, has been providing open captioning and audio description services at live theatrical performances throughout Hampton Roads. Access Virginia’s trained team provides Open Captioning and Audio Description services at public venues.
Open Captioning is a speech-to-text display on an LED board providing simultaneous transcription of scripted dialogue, lyrics and descriptions of environmental sounds for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Audio description is a narration service that guides the listener with concise, objective descriptions of scenes, settings, costumes, and body language for blind or visually impaired audience members.
Williamsburg Community Endowment and Field of Interest Funds will present a $5,000 grant to Access Virginia on Wednesday, September 29, 2021. Lois Boyle, Executive Director and Past President of Access Virginia, who expresses gratitude and excitement on behalf of the organization, “We are delighted to have the opportunity to expand our services into Greater Williamsburg.”
Boyle says this grant will also support the production of the play, Between Sound and Silence, featuring a traveling cast, all with varying degrees of hearing loss.
