Yesterday, I got something partially wrong in my post about shooting fawns, which somehow turned into multi million-view debate. So I want to clear something up. In 45 of 50 states, it’s legal to kill fawns during deer season. The five exceptions are California, Connecticut, Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi. So yes, in most states, you can legally shoot a spotted fawn. But that brings me to the bigger question. Just because you can do something, does that mean you should?

My opinion hasn’t changed. I don’t think you should shoot a 20-pound fawn. What are you getting out of that? You might as well shoot a couple of rabbits. If farmers slaughtered all their calves, how much beef would they produce? Bigger deer equals more meat. It’s really that simple. And for the “if it’s brown, it’s down” hunters who say they’re only hunting for meat, wouldn’t it make more sense to let that deer grow? Listen, it’s your tag, and I’m not telling you what you should legally be allowed to shoot. I’m just saying that just because something is legal doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. I know that will make some people mad, but come on, don’t shoot the 20-pound fawn.
