I have big beautiful pieces of Turquoise on my bench this week. And a ceramic owl 🦉.

My studio feels a bit different this time though. The last time I was in here building jewelry my mom was alive. I was calling to hear her voice every other day and texting her daily to check on her.

It feels different now. Like I am a different person. I guess I sort of am.

Luckily, my daughter Emily has joined me though. And so the strange sense of aloneness is being punctuated by her presence. It’s just what I needed.

She is making bracelets this week. Some are Czech glass and some are Shiva’s. Teal and white. They are stretchy and made in specific sizes. Just measure the wrist area where you plan to wear your bracelet and choose that size.

I’ll share in my story when they are ready to view 🤓

A big brown ammonite heart ring 🙌🏼 crowned with a massive chunk of multi-colored Chrysocolla. And snuggled in between 2 ROSES 🌹.

This piece was commissioned by a custom-client and has already left my studio, but I have more big beautiful sterling silver rings coming soon. A ready to ship ammonite pendant too 🐌 ☺️

This turquoise ring design is over two inches long and over 1 inch wide. She will be catching the eye of every jewelry enthusiast who sees her.

And she is available for commissioning.

Because of the weight of the 3 big blue stones and all that shiny sterling silver, she will be hefty. So I suggest she be worn on the middle finger. That way she has lots of support from her sister-fingers 🤭.

Want to see more photos of the stones and read about how to commission a large one of a kind piece of jewelry? Use the link at the top of my .in.reality account page 🤓

Three childhood influences led me to become a silversmith.

First, I was born to a metalsmith. My father worked steel, aluminum, and tungsten, using large machines to create engine & machinery parts. I visited his work often to watch him take a piece of metal and cut it into precise forms.

At home, he worked on cars in the garage, and I followed him regularly. He gave me my own tools and projects to work on, like sanding down three-wheeling helmets or putting little appliances back together.

From him, I learned how to be comfortable with machinery, tools, & loud workshops.

Second, my grandfathers were rock hounds. One took me on hikes into the Cascade Mountains and taught me how to look for stones with color and texture that made them special. The other grandfather rockhounded large quantities of petrified wood (when it was legal to collect), agate, and onyx. He kept piles and piles in his backyard. His finer specimens sat out on display.

From them, I became fascinated by stones.

Thirdly, my parents rode motorcycles and were part of 80’s biker culture. Large stone rings and necklaces were a personal fashion staple in all the men and women who frequented our home. One time, when I was just 14, my parents commissioned a piece of sterling silver and stone jewelry. I visited the silversmith’s studio with them, and at that moment, I first had the idea to become a silversmith.

From them, I learned about jewelry and how stones create a personal style for the person who wears them.

Each experience had a major effect on my personal interests and ultimately created the silversmith that I am today. I imagine that every silversmith out there has a unique set of circumstances that fueled their urge to forge metal with stone to create beautiful pieces of wearable art.

Being a silversmith was always in my cards. It just took me some time to get here. Thanks for being here to witness my creative journey. Your presence puts wind in my sail.

My headaches are getting better. And so is my low mood. Beyond that, I’m feeling full of energy, super creative, and very empowered.

If you are new here, you may not know the whole story. A couple of years ago, after empty-nesting, lockdown, a big move, and the death of my grandmother, I developed depression. It got worse and worse. Then, something inside of me snapped.

A big migraine came.

And it didn’t go away.

For 6 months. Keeping up with my handcrafted custom jewelry business became harder and harder.

Of course, my depression worsened, and after failed measures with standard medical care, I reached the end of my rope.

So, I tried Ketamine Therapy. And after years of struggle, my deep dark depression lifted. Like magick. No, really. That’s what it felt like to me. And a couple of weeks later, my headache completely vanished.

As I ended my 11-week Ketamine Therapy, though, and my treatments were getting spaced apart, my headaches began to creep back in. So, I am going to start an at-home maintenance program. If you want to follow along and read about that personal journey, you can find me at .in.reality.

Thanks for being here. Thank you for all your support while I’ve flopped around trying to keep up with my jewelry-making business over the past year. Your presence has made the challenges of this season so much easier for me to bear.
