Kunzite is the pale pink to light-violet gem-quality variety of the pyroxene mineral spodumene. Kunzite was first discovered in Connecticut, USA, and was named after George Frederick Kunz (1856 - 1932), an American mineralogist and the former vice president and buyer for Tiffany & Company.
A beautiful 47-carat kunzite ring sold for over $410,000 at a Sotheby's auction of the Estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in 1996. President Kennedy purchased it as a gift for his wife, but never had the chance to give it to her.
Kunzite colors range from light pink to rich lavender and violet. Its color is owed to traces of manganese.
Kunzite exhibits strong pleochroism, (color changing property) requiring lapidaries to properly orient the cut in order to maximize color. Cutting can be a real challenge due to its perfect cleavage.

Come visit our store and find that perfect, one of a kind gift.....like this exquisite custom-made Ametrine pendant & chain designed by John Kokkinos, with intricate details that can only be appreciated in person.
This 14K two-tone 34.29 Ct. Ametrine commands your attention and screams "Look at Me". Accented with vivid yellow diamonds and seen here with a beautiful 14K yellow gold puffed Mariner chain, this unique piece is sure to please.
Ametrine, a naturally occurring variety of quartz, is a mixture of Amethyst and Citrine with zones of purple & yellow or orange, all resulting from varying temperatures across the stone during its formation. It derives almost exclusively from one mine deep in the lowlands of Bolivia.
A popular legend links ametrine to a certain Princess Anahi of the Bolivian Ayoreo tribe. Engaged in a forbidden love affair with a conquistador (as the story goes), her tribesmen kill her, but not before she gives her lover a gift- a glowing crystal of ametrine.
