People ask us these every week. Might as well answer them here.

How do I sell inherited jewelry without getting ripped off?
Go somewhere with credentials. GIA certified buyers are trained in gemstone and metal evaluation. Ask them to walk you through every step of the offer. If they can't explain it, leave.

What should I do with estate jewelry after a loved one passes?
Don't rush. Get it appraised first. Know what you have before you decide anything.

What is a heirloom jewelry appraisal?
A professional evaluation of what a piece is actually worth based on metal content, gemstones, condition, and market. At Precious Metals and Gems, it's free. Always has been, since 1979.

How do I find a jewelry buyer in Overland Park I can trust?
Look for GIA certification. Look for a business that's been here long enough to have a real reputation.

Free appraisals. No appointment. No obligation.

“When I started the process of selling silver and jewelry, I fully expected to get two opinions. After talking with Carlos, I felt so comfortable and confident that I sold my things right then. I would highly recommend Precious Metals and Gems, and Carlos.”

This is what a real gold test looks like. Our team runs every piece through three
checks. Weight on a calibrated scale. Acid or electronic test for purity. Cross-reference against the live spot price for gold that day.

Then we walk you through the math. What it weighs. What karat it tests at. What that translates to in dollars right now. If any of those steps get skipped somewhere else, that's worth noticing. Bring it in when you a couple minutes to spare!

Most people walk in not sure what they actually have. That's exactly why we do free appraisals. A drawer of broken chains. A single earring whose match disappeared years ago. A class ring from 1987. A box of flatware marked sterling. Coins your dad kept in a coffee can.

None of it has to match. None of it has to be in good shape. Weight and purity drive value on gold and silver. A broken clasp doesn't change either one. We'll weigh it, test it, and walk you through what each piece is actually worth at today's market.

GIA certified buyers. No appointment. No obligation to sell. Bring it in when you have ten minutes.

There's a drawer in your house that hasn't been opened in years, and it has gold in it. A broken chain. A single earring whose pair is long gone. A class ring nobody is going to wear again. A bracelet that snapped and never got fixed.

Most people leave that drawer alone because they assume broken means worthless, it doesn't!

Broken gold is still gold. Weight and purity drive the value, and both of those survive a snapped clasp.

You don't need to fix anything. You don't need to clean anything. You don't need an appointment. Bring the drawer. We'll handle the rest!

Free appraisal. GIA certified buyers. No obligation to sell. Walk in any time Monday through Saturday.

Need a watch repaired? A lot of watches end up in drawers because they stopped running, not because anyone wanted to retire them. A stuck movement. A dead battery that sat too long. A bent crown. A worn gasket.

Most of it is repairable. All of it is done in-shop, here on Metcalf. Nothing gets shipped out.

Father's Day is two and a half weeks out. A serviced watch he hasn't worn in a decade is a better gift than anything in a box.

Walk in any time Monday through Saturday and we'll take a look. Quotes are free. GIA certified buyers on staff if you want it appraised at the same visit, no appointment, no obligation.

Most people with a coin collection in the have no idea what's actually in it. They know the coins are old. They know some might be silver. Beyond that, the value is a guess.

That guess is almost always wrong, in one direction or the other. A few coins worth knowing about:

Walking Liberty Half. The right one can run up to $4,700.
Seated Dime. Can reach up to $6,500.
Draped Bust Dollar. Up to $100,000 for the right piece.

Most coins are not those examples. That's fine. The point is that you can't tell by looking, and you don't need to. We do that part!

Free appraisal. GIA certified buyers. No appointment, no obligation. Walk in any time Monday through Saturday.

A fair gold offer is built on three numbers: weight, purity, and current spot price. If any one of those gets skipped, that could be a red flag.

Weight is straightforward. We use a calibrated scale and we let you watch the reading.

Purity is the karat: 10K, 14K, 18K, 22K, 24K. We test it. Acid testing, electronic testing, sometimes both. Plated and gold-filled pieces look like gold but aren't worth the same, and the test is the only way to know the difference.

Spot price is the live market value of an ounce of gold. It changes every day. Anyone giving you an offer without referencing today's spot may not be giving you a real offer.

Our buyers are GIA certified. If you have a bag of broken chains or a piece you've been meaning to ask about, bring it in. We'll walk you through what it is, what it weighs, and what it's worth at today's market.

How to get an honest appraisal on inherited jewelry? An accurate appraisal of inherited jewelry is not a guess at a counter. It's a process with specific steps.

When someone brings in a piece from a parent or grandparent, the first thing we do is identify the metal and test for purity. Weigh the piece on a calibrated scale. Examine any gemstones, diamonds are graded for cut, color, clarity, and carat using the GIA standard. Note maker's marks, hallmarks, era, and condition.

Reference current spot prices for any gold or silver content. Then walk you through what each component is worth. That last step is the one that matters. You should leave knowing not just a number, but how we got to it.

Free appraisals. No appointment. No obligation!
