What's going on here, you ask? Last week our upstairs water heater leaked into part of the downstairs or our store at the Stanford Shopping Center. We have progressed from drying and dehumidifying everything to sealing the front of the showroom off from the reconstruction. The third photo shows the scaffolding erected to enable removing the damaged part of the ceiling in the back of the showroom. Like any true retailer, we are remaining open throughout the process, and look forward to seeing you (in our slightly shortened showroom) as we complete the work. We are fortunate in that the water did not harm any walls or jewelry or watches. And our experienced staff members remain adaptable to showing jewelry and helping you with your repairs under any circumstances. Stop by to say hello and check the progress......our jewelry still sparkles! (Many thanks to the shopping center's maintenance staff for all their help during the initial cleanup.)

Seventy years ago today, near our company's 26th anniversary in Palo Alto, we were among the original tenants to open in the brand-new Stanford Shopping Center. From our archives here is the original ad we ran in the Palo Alto TImes, as well as an invitation we sent to our clients to our opening weekend, that Thursday, Friday and Saturday. (NO one was open on Sundays in those days!) We are proud to share that original tenant status with See's Candies as the only two business which have been here since the inception. The shopping center has remained an important factor in our success ever since, as have our generations of clients who have allowed us to share our joy in fine jewelry with them.

Today is Gleim the Jeweler's 95th anniversary! Frederick W. Gleim opened the door on April 1, 1931. (Yes, April Fool's Day in the middle of the Depression.) His son, Arthur Gleim, shown in the second picture, worked in the business from its inception. The original ledger book famously shows that we didn't take in a dime on that first day. Fortunately, things improved, and here we are 95 years later. We've seen a lot of history over the decades, and commemorated many important family celebrations for Peninsula residents since that first day. Thanks to our local communities for having faith in us and for making it fun for all these years. Now it's on to 100!

For centuries, aquamarine has been connected to the sea.

Ancient Greek and Roman sailors believed the gemstone offered protection on long voyages. Its calm blue color reminded them of clear skies and peaceful water — symbols of a safe journey.

Long before modern gem mining, aquamarines traveled thousands of miles through ancient trade networks. Gemstones mined in Egypt and Asia eventually reached Mediterranean ports, where sailors and merchants encountered them.

Even the name aquamarine comes from Latin: aqua marina — “water of the sea.”

Buccellati jewelry is often recognized for its lace-like gold.

In the early 1900s, founder Mario Buccellati became fascinated with translating delicate Italian textiles into metal. Instead of treating gold as a solid surface, Buccellati artisans carefully carve away sections by hand to create intricate openwork designs.

This technique, known as ‘traforo’, allows light to pass through the piece, giving the gold a delicate, almost weightless appearance — much like lace.

More than a century later, this tradition of craftsmanship remains one of the signatures of Buccellati.

Estate diamonds have a different kind of sparkle.

Before modern technology, diamonds were cut entirely by hand. Their larger facets were designed to glow in candlelight, creating a softer, romantic brilliance.

It’s a kind of beauty that modern cutting rarely replicates.

That’s part of what makes estate jewelry so special.
