Building around finished ammolite is its own kind of problem. The gemstone is soft and layered, so the setting has to protect every edge without crowding the fire underneath it.

That’s where most of the time goes. How much metal wraps the gemstone, and how much of that play of color stays open to the light. Each choice is a trade between holding the gemstone secure and letting it do what makes ammolite worth setting in the first place.
