Kara Hetz Jewelry Making jewelry is a way to continually bring the work back to the body, an external reminder of the things that we carry. www.karahetz.com/

I have worked with many media, paint, paper, wood, yarn, flour and song among them, and toward different ends, but there is something particularly satisfying in creating that which adorns the body. As an evolving jewelry artist I am continually exploring uncommon ways to present common forms. I am inspired as much by the complex interplay of the emotional and physical as I am by the natural. The m

aterials themselves also provide fertile ground--the sensuality of metal, the way it softens with fire, moves with a hammer and changes color and texture under different conditions is a constant source of intrigue for me. These transformations are analogous to our own constant change as humans under the influences and pressures of our daily lives. The work is always inspired by a desire to create wearable pieces that elicit the visceral in the wearer.

Old dog, new trick...
Here's a commission piece I created for a special client. She wanted me to re-string two 16" strands of graduated heirloom pearls, one from her mother and the other from her grandmother. As I am not one to leave well enough alone, I suggested that we combine them in some way to form a longer strand. She was game and after giving her a couple options we settled on an asymmetric but balanced design, where the pearls would move from small to large and back down again in multiple places, giving the strand an undulating effect. The two strands were slightly different colors, one warmer and one cooler but we decided that was ok and in the end they blended well. I am new to traditional pearl stringing and this was a good test of my skills after taking a wonderful class with an expert some months ago. (Thank you, !) The pearls are strung on silk with a knot separating each, a task requiring a steady hand and a patient mind. Some days are good for this type of work and some...are knot. 🙃 Handmade sterling silver clasp.
