Keep an eye out for invasive hammerhead worms, like this one recently spotted at the Lake of the Ozarks. These flatworms release toxins that can irritate skin, and if eaten, can make people and pets sick. Should you come across a hammerhead worm, euthanize it by placing it in a sealed plastic bag with vinegar or rubbing alcohol or by freezing. Cutting up the hammerhead worm will not kill it as the pieces can regenerate. MDC does not take reports on hammerhead worm sightings, but we do encourage folks to control any they may find.
