I don’t regularly post work in progress pictures, but this custom A.H. Fox 20 gauge built by Matthew Begley deserves a glimpse prior to completion…

An original Fox engraving serves as the archetype for this work, providing a historical foundation for an interpretation expressed in my own artistic voice. My aim is to honor the character and elegance of the period while bringing my own sense of movement, balance, and refinement to the steel.

The ornament is laid out directly on the metal in pencil and engraved by hand, allowing each scroll, tendril and leaf to develop in harmony with the gun’s contours. There is something deeply rewarding about working in this traditional manner—a direct connection between the artist’s eye, the hand, and the steel.

As the engraving progresses, the goal remains a harmonious whole: a thoughtful tribute to the American gunmaking tradition, with an identity all its own.

Classic C**t character, elevated through custom craftsmanship.

This large-letter Series 70 C**t in .45 ACP brings together Kirk Robinson’s gunsmithing and my engraving. Kirk deserves credit for the rebuild, with attention to accuracy, function, and aesthetics—the foundation of a custom pistol that should perform as beautifully as it presents.

My contribution includes the hand engraving and square trigger guard modification, bringing a distinctive profile and flowing ornament to the familiar Government Model lines. The contrast of dark steel, intricate scrollwork, and warm cream-colored grips completes the composition.

A collaboration in which mechanical craftsmanship and engraving serve the same purpose: making a classic C**t something special.

There is a particular quiet beneath the golden aspens.

Leaves whisper overhead. Your boots stir the sweet musty smell of moss covered earth. In your hands, the Parker carries the familiar weight of days like this.

Then the woods erupt.

A woodcock bursts from the cover—wings beating through the brush, a fleeting shape rising between the pale trunks.

Thought gives way to instinct.

The stock meets your cheek, the barrels follow, and the shot breaks the autumn stillness.

For a moment, you stand listening.

A drifting leaf. The fading echo. Your own breath.

Later, walking out beneath the lengthening shadows, your fingers settle into the Parker’s checkering. The light catches a curl of engraving, then slips away.

You remember the flush. The bird’s sudden turn. That brief instant when eye, hand, and gun moved together.

And you remember everything around it—the cool air, the smell of fallen leaves, the miles walked with nowhere else you needed to be.

At the edge of the woods, you pause for one last look.

Autumn Classics.

As grouse seasons open and sportsmen head to the woods for opening days, the turning leaves and crisp mornings signal a welcome return to days afield. The rustle of leaves underfoot, a dog becoming birdy, and the sudden thunder of a grouse taking flight are moments that stay with us long after the hunt is over.

For me, fine art engraving gives those memories a permanent home in steel. Game scenes and flowing ornament capture something of the sporting life, preserving our love of the dogs, birds, and wild places that make these days so meaningful.

This Parker Reproduction brings together my engraving, Brian Dudley’s beautiful stockmaking, and the rich metal finishes of Turnbull Restorations. Each craftsman’s contribution helps make it a lasting tribute to the traditions of the field.

A tribute to John M. Browning and the art of hand engraving.

This Belgian FN Hi-Power provided a beautiful canvas for my scrollwork, with flowing leaves, fine shading, and textured backgrounds following the pistol’s distinctive contours.

For me, engraving is a conversation between the original design and the artist’s hand. The goal is to complement the firearm’s lines while giving it an individual character—something to be enjoyed today and passed down through generations.

Precision gunmaking and the art of hand engraving.

Completed earlier this year in collaboration with Heirloom Precision, this bespoke C**t .38 Super features my deep relief acanthus scroll engraving. Florid leaves, flowing ornament, and carefully cut shading create depth and movement across the steel, complementing the pistol’s classic lines.

It was a pleasure to contribute my artistry to a project that brings fine custom gunmaking and traditional engraving together—a functional work of art to be enjoyed today and treasured for generations.

Inspired by the work of Louis D. Nimschke, my design for the 2026 C**t Collectors Association gun expresses my personal interpretation of traditional C**t scroll engraving and precious metal inlay.

The resulting bespoke creation pays homage to the inextricable connection between fine art engraving and C**t firearms—a legacy interpreted through my own hand.

My sincere appreciation goes to the CCA Board of Directors for entrusting me with this commission, to Master Engraver Michael Dubber for his support and guidance, to John Powers for his metal finishing, and to gripmaker Sam Kohlar for his craftsmanship. It is an honor to contribute my work alongside theirs.

I’m back to work in my new studio in Huntsville Alabama. This Panerai watch was commissioned by a customer requesting an art nouveau aesthetic. I suggested my own interpretation of liberty scroll which I learned at last year’s GRS grand master class. The drop shadows add a sense of depth and weight to the bold movements of the design on this piece of wearable artwork.
