On this day in 1851, the United States government struck a deal to build what would become one of Texas’ most iconic coastal landmarks, the Port Isabel Lighthouse. Rising 57 feet from the sandy ground and standing 82 feet above sea level, this brick tower has watched over the Laguna Madre longer than most Texas towns have existed. Its original beacon could throw light fifteen miles out into the Gulf, guiding sailors home like a true coastal guardian.

Over the years, the lighthouse became more than a navigational aid, it turned into a lookout post for Texas history itself. It kept watch during the Cortina War, the Civil War, and both World Wars, serving as the eyes of the coast. By 1936 it earned its state historic marker, and even by the 1990s its mercury-vapor beam was still charted as a trusted guide for ships.

Today, the lighthouse is cared for by Texas Parks and Wildlife, with daily operations handed over to the City of Port Isabel after a new visitor center opened in 1996. A major restoration wrapped up in 2000, polishing this coastal sentinel back to its former glory, still standing proud, still shining, and still as Texan as a Gulf Coast sunrise.
