How Many Levels of Jadeite Are There? 💚

People often ask me, “How do you rank jadeite quality?”

Let’s start from the bottom.

At the lowest end, you have extremely coarse jadeite, sometimes nicknamed “dog-poop jade” in the trade. Its texture is rough, its translucency is poor, and its market value is usually very low. Some people still use it to make jewelry!

Move up, and you’ll find bean-textured jadeite, then finer glutinous and icy varieties, all the way to highly transparent, glass-like jadeite.

And when you combine excellent texture and translucency with vivid imperial green? The value can rise dramatically.

But here’s the thing: there’s no fixed price ceiling. Color, texture, translucency, craftsmanship, rarity, and market demand all matter.

The lower grades can be beautiful for everyday wear, while exceptional pieces may attract serious collectors.

In jadeite, the higher the quality, the rarer it gets. 💚

Putting on a Bangle Shouldn’t Hurt! 💚

Does putting on a jade bangle always have to hurt?

Honestly, probably not.

You might just be using the wrong technique.

Here’s an easier way.

First, apply a little hand lotion to help the bangle slide more easily. 🧴

Now, focus on the widest part of your hand, especially around these three bony areas.

Instead of forcing the bangle straight over them, place it over your four fingers first.

Then tuck your thumb toward your palm.

This is usually where people get stuck.

Gently squeeze your thumb in and slowly work the bangle over your hand.

Once it passes the widest part, give it one gentle push and let the lotion do the rest.

See? Much easier! ✨

But remember, if you need excessive force or feel significant pain, don’t force it. The bangle may not be the right size.

5 Jade Bangles, But Which One Is Real? 💚

Only one of these five is real jadeite.

Can you spot it?

First, let’s look at the shine.

Honestly, they all have a pretty strong luster.

Maybe one or two look slightly less shiny, but the difference is very subtle.

So shine alone isn’t enough.

Now let’s try something else.

The UV light test. 🔦

Some of them start glowing blue or purple under the UV light, while others barely change at all.

But here’s the important part:

UV reaction can give you a clue, but it cannot prove that a piece is real jadeite by itself.

You need to look at several things together, including the luster, internal structure, color distribution, and professional gemological testing.

Can You Spot the Fake? 👀💚

At first glance, both pieces look shiny.

But look closer.

The one on the left has a stronger, more natural-looking luster.

Still, shine alone isn’t enough.

Now check the structure. 🔍

On the left, you can see natural texture and cotton-like inclusions inside the jadeite.

On the right, see those tiny sparkles?

They may come from tiny surface pits and bubbles, rather than the natural internal structure you would expect from jadeite.

Now look at the color. 🎨

The left side has natural color variation, lighter in some areas and deeper in others.

But on the right, the color looks much more concentrated.

Notice how the darker color gathers mainly along the cracks?

That can be a warning sign of dyed or treated material.

So don’t judge jade by shine alone.

Look at the luster.
Look at the structure.
Look at the color distribution.
