Last call, folks! My master broom maker from Kentucky is retiring. We have just ONE witch broom in rainbow, 4 basic brooms in both striped and mixed rainbow, and 3 basic brooms with rainbow crayon cording (do I sense a theme here? Nah…). The witch broom has a reclaimed hardwood stick twisted by choking kudzu vines, the others have American Poplar sticks. All are handmade with broomcorn, not straw, in the millennia old traditions of broom makers everywhere. These are truly functional works of art you will love using for decades ahead. Yup, I’m here at the shop today - so far, just a bit of a blow, nothing too serious yet anyway. Barely even drizzling. So if you’re bored at home and in town, come on over. No guarantee on how late I’ll stay here today, but I plan to be here til 5. I put the flag out on purpose because it’s a really good measure of what’s happening; when it starts going crazy I hear the flag whipping and know it’s time to close up and go home. In the meantime I’m packing web orders from last night and cleaning. One sad note, for those who really know me. My boots are back. No more sandals ☹️ at least for today.

Ready or not, in they come. I harvested pretty much every last Granny Smith, Pippin and D’Anjou pears whether they wanted to come off the trees or not. Better to ripen on the counter or get cooked, dehydrated or frozen than to get turned into missiles tomorrow. Winds expected in the 35-55mph range starting tomorrow afternoon until Sunday evening, current forecast calls for 4-6” of rain over the next 3 days. I brought out Meyer lemon tree and our pineapple plant in earlier than usual and did the usual pre-storm checks around the property to make sure we’re good. Hopefully we won’t lose power - but since we’re not even heating the house yet if we do we’ll be fine. We were dark for 4.5 days last winter and our fridge and freezers were fine. Life on the Outer Cape!

Tis the season… I normally shift to Fall Store Hours a bit later in the fall but with the nor’easter showing up this weekend I will probably have to close up early anyway so I figured I might as well make it official. I’m still here seven days a week, and truth be told I will typically be here until 6ish most nights, not just Friday and Saturdays, but this let’s me go home earlier if it’s really really quiet.

It’s already getting pretty breezy here but the sun is out so it’s warm in the sun. Real weather isn’t expected here until Friday, and as those of you who are familiar with Cape weather know, that means anything could still happen here this weekend from a torrential monsoon (some predictions mention 6” of rain) to scattered sprinkles. We shall see…

As always, orders placed online will ship within 24 hours, often much much faster than that.
