As of June 9th, 2026 — Renown Health has notified community midwives that they will no longer accept orders from CPMs and Licensed Midwives for routine prenatal labs and ultrasounds.

For many families, especially those with Hometown Health, which requires services be performed through Renown, this means additional appointments, additional costs, delays in care, and fewer options for receiving prenatal services.

Nevada already faces provider shortages, maternity care deserts, and some of the worst maternal-child health outcomes in the country.

Community midwives have been helping fill those gaps for years by providing prenatal, birth, and postpartum care to families throughout Northern Nevada.

Routine prenatal labs and ultrasounds are a normal part of maternity care. Community midwives are educated and trained to order and interpret these studies. Removing access to those services creates another hurdle for families seeking care outside the hospital system.

If this concerns you, please contact Renown and your Nevada legislators. Let them know that reducing access to prenatal testing is not the direction Nevada should be moving.

If you've received care from a community midwife, had a home birth, birth center birth, VBAC, or simply believe families should have options, now is the time to speak up.

Please share.
We are tired.
We can’t keep fighting alone.
Every deserves access to midwifery care.

A couple days out from repeating Birth Emergency Skills Training, and I keep reminiscing about how differently this training feels now compared to when I was a student four years ago.

Back then, I don’t think I fully understood the weight of practicing in true rural community birth. I trained in places where a hospital was two stoplights away. Help felt immediate. There were always multiple skilled hands in the room. If something changed quickly, there was comfort in knowing higher-level care was right there.

Now, I practice in rural Nevada, where transport can sometimes mean one, two, even four hours. There are births where it’s just me. No extra set of experienced hands standing beside me. No nearby unit down the street. And that reality changes the way you approach everything. It changes the way you prepare, the way you train, the way you think through emergencies, and the level of responsibility you carry walking into someone’s home.

One of the things I felt most deeply this weekend was gratitude. Gratitude for the women who have poured into me over the last eight years. Some of these same women whose births I attended as a student are now both midwives and students themselves now. That kind of full-circle growth is something really special to witness, and a torch that is beautiful to pass on.

Midwifery is such a small, tight-knit community. There’s something incredibly grounding about knowing where your people are — even when they live five hours away — and knowing they would still drop everything to answer a call, help you debrief a case, teach you something, or make sure you never have to carry this work alone.

Thank you again to Andrea Dixon and Willa Woodard-Ervin. I’m deeply grateful for BEST, for the standards this organization holds, and for the willingness to continue teaching midwives how to think critically, respond calmly, and keep growing no matter how long we’ve been doing this work.

1 in 5 pregnant individuals will experience a perinatal mental health disorder (PMHD), yet many don’t recognize the signs until they’re already struggling.

PMHD symptoms can look like:
• Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or constantly on edge
• Persistent sadness, numbness, or hopelessness
• Racing or intrusive thoughts
• Difficulty bonding or feeling like “yourself”
• Trouble sleeping, even when your baby sleeps

When we connect the dots, we make maternal mental health visible.
And when it’s visible, it becomes treatable, supportable, and understood.

💙 If you see yourself in this, you are not alone.
💙 If you recognize this in someone else, check in.

We are excited to announce our new 24/7 confidential crisis hotline for community perinatal birth workers (midwives, doulas, student midwives etc). If you have experienced a difficult birth or other work based experience, feel free to call any time. Sometimes it can be helpful to debrief confidentially with an unconnected trauma informed birth worker who is not in your community. We can lend a non-judgmental ear and give you access to other services if you want them. You don’t have to go it alone or be strong for everyone. “Peace begins at birth, but peace starts with me.”
