Halloween isn't American. It's Irish β and it's around 2,000 years old. π
Samhain (say SOW-in) marked the end of the harvest and the start of the dark half of the year. The Celts believed that on this one night the wall between this world and the Otherworld thinned enough to step through. In both directions.
So they did three things.
π₯ They lit great bonfires on the hills, and every hearth in the parish was relit from that one flame.
π They wore disguises β skins, soot, straw masks β so that whatever crossed over wouldn't recognise them.
π½οΈ They set a place at the table and left food at the door for the dead who were welcome.
Irish emigrants carried all of it to America in the 1800s. The carved turnip lantern became the pumpkin. The disguise became the costume. The food at the door became trick-or-treat.
Every Halloween, you are doing something Irish. π
