ADORN ADORES – More adoration for the container gardening design approach of thrillers, fillers and spillers. These last few days we talked about our favorite thrillers and spillers for summer. Last, but certainly not least, are spillers. We think the spillers offer the real drama to container garden design. The choices for spillers in the summer are endless - moneywort, sweet potato vine (so many color options), silver falls (dichondra), fan flower (scaevola) and vinca major are a few of our favorites. Another option is dragon wing begonia, which is pictured above - it's gorgeous and can be used as both filler and spiller - perfect for a shade or partial shade. We used it here as a filler and spiller and also have vinca major as another spiller and kimberly queen fern as the thriller.

Check in again tomorrow and we’ll talk about COLOR combos in containers. Woo hoo! Who else is ready for a little pop of color in their planters?!?!

ADORN ADORES – Thrillers, fillers and spillers, oh my! We talked about our favorite spillers yesterday, so today let’s give the filler some lovin. Fillers are the plants that fill in the space between the tall thriller and the low spillers. There are so many choices for summer…where to start? Great options for shady summer fillers are impatiens, shade begonias, caladium, shade coleus or ferns. Nice choices for sunny spots are , lantana, sun begonias, angelonia, dusty miller, pentas, diamond frost euphorbia or asparagus fern.

In the picture we used confetti lantana as the filler with a hibiscus as the thriller and sweet potato vine as the spiller.

Tomorrow, we’ll spill the beans on spillers. Ha!

ADORN ADORES - Everyday through Valentine’s Day we’ll share daily container garden loves and tips – hope you enjoy and join in the conversation!

Who's in the market for new outdoor pots? Now is the perfect time to shop while the garden centers are fully stocked but not too busy with the spring gardening season. Four things to consider when selecting a container are style, size, material and color.

STYLE – The style of your outdoor planters should complement the style of your home. Planters with clean lines and modern shape would blend well with a contemporary style home. If the outside of your house is very traditional, consider an urn or another classic style.

SIZE - The size of your containers should be in proportion to the size of your house, especially if they are in the front. You can also try groupings of pots to increase the scale. If you’re torn between two sizes, select the larger one because larger containers require less watering and there is more room for the roots to grow so your plants are happier.

MATERIAL - Boy, lots of choices here: glazed ceramic, terra-cotta and resin to name a few. Water evaporates more quickly from porous materials like terra-cotta than other materials like resin. We are fans of resin because they are lightweight and are made to look just like stone, cast concrete or cast iron. We also love glazed ceramic for the pop of color. Can't beat a cobalt blue ceramic planter!

COLOR - We like the color of our planters to contrast to the background. For example, if you have a red brick home or a light colored home, we would recommend black or cobalt blue planters. If the pots will be placed in front of a dark background, we would recommend light grey.

Hope this provides a little direction if you are on the hunt for that perfect container. We happen to love Crescent Garden outdoor planters because they come in so many shapes and sizes. If you have a particular brand you love please share.

Stay tuned tomorrow for the scoop on our favorite container gardening tools!
