🪙 THE PENNY THAT HAD AMERICA SEEING DOUBLE
It looks like somebody struck the coin twice.
They didn’t.
The legendary 1955 Doubled Die Obverse Lincoln Cent was born when a working die at the Philadelphia Mint received misaligned impressions during the die-making process, creating dramatic doubling that would eventually turn an ordinary one-cent piece into one of the most famous varieties in American coin collecting.
Approximately 40,000 were struck, and by the time the problem was discovered, an estimated 24,000 had already escaped into circulation.

🚬 THE CIGARETTE MACHINE CONNECTION IS TRUE.
In 1955, some vending machines sold ci******es for 23¢, but the machines accepted quarters and couldn’t return two cents in change.
The solution?
Vendors actually tucked TWO PENNIES inside the cellophane of the cigarette pack as change.
And some of those shiny pennies happened to be…

Collectors began discovering them in cigarette packs throughout parts of Massachusetts and New York. Imagine buying a 23-cent pack of ci******es and finding what would eventually become a legendary collectible tucked inside the wrapper.
