Have you wondered how to spot 👀 fake 14kt gold filled products?
1️⃣ First, what is 14kt gold filled?
A layer of 14kt gold ✨ equaling a minimum of 5% of the total weight ⚖️ mechanically bonded to a brass core. Once bonded, it is impossible to physically separate.
Because of the way it is made, it cannot be cast. Casting means pouring molten material into a mould to create a shape. This is easily done with metals such as sterling silver or solid gold. It is not possible with gold filled because melting gold fill would not retain the layers. It would turn into a blobby mixed mess of gold and brass .
This limits the number of items that can be manufactured in gold fill to those made as WIRE, TUBE, or SHEET. (See slide 2)
2️⃣ Secondly, in the United States, the term “gold filled” is regulated by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) under FTC jewelry guidelines 📖 . A product cannot legally be labeled or sold as “gold filled” in or into the U.S. unless it meets FTC standards.
💭 Why is this important?
As the industry has grown, overseas manufacturers have attempted to cheaply replicate FTC-regulated American 14kt gold filled by heavily plating products and labeling them “gold filled.” This has caused so much confusion within the jewelry industry!
Think of it as the Temu/Shein/Alibaba version of what you thought you were ordering. All of the products shown above 📸 (see slide one), are advertised as “14kt gold filled”.
🤔 When you see a chain, charm, or connector that makes you wonder how it could be made out of sheet, tube, or wire, question the reseller.
Despite how convincing the seller may be, you now understand how they can’t possibly be the FTC regulated 14kt gold filled you have grown accustomed to in the permanent jewelry industry.
