Thursday, November 12, 6 to 8 PM. We’re making mugs, hand-built, no experience needed. We’ll decorate them with underglaze that evening and I’ll fire and glaze them afterward so they come back food-safe and ready to use.
They’ll be ready in early December. Handmade by you, for someone you like. Or keep it for yourself.
Bring a buddy and you’ll each pay $65 instead of $75. Or come alone, you’ll be in good company. Only 8 seats.

Sometimes I need to step back from a painting to figure out where I want it to go. This one started with more detail than I really wanted, so I took a photo and played around with a few changes on my phone before going back to the canvas.
In the end, I painted over sections, modified values and added little pops of color and texture with collage. It took a few tries to find my way, but that’s part of the process.

Last night we made one painting together.

Seven of us around one table, everyone adding to the same surface, building off whatever the person before them had done. Nobody made their own piece. We all made all of it.

Then we cut it apart.

What I loved most wasn’t the painting. It was listening to the room, people encouraging each other, laughing, pointing out the brilliant parts of what someone else had just done. Nobody was worried about whether they were any good at this.

And then watching everyone find their sections. Something happens when you crop a small piece out of a big messy whole, it becomes its own composition and suddenly looks intentional in a way nobody planned. Everyone went home with more than one.

This is what these evenings are for. The art is the reason we’re in the room, but the people are the point.
