Nicole Rimedio, the designer behind Variance Objects, creates jewelry that highlights the natural beauty of raw materials. While she received her BA in Architecture and Urbanism from Smith College, and her master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from UC Berkeley, making jewelry has always been her path. Nicole founded Variance in 2013 with her partner Scott. Scott manages operations and Nicole is the artist. They both have a passion for gemstones and together they source fine gem specimens and rough rock from gem collectors and small scale miners. Nicole and Scott live and work in Santa Cruz, California.

What is a precious stone? The gem world would consider this carnelian rather mundane. Not so rare, and not so precious. But we know better. We know that every stone has the capacity to be extraordinary.

This particular stone was cut for a very old piece of carnelian. Mined over 100 years ago at least. It has a saturation of color that we’ve never seen before, and a gradient that is truly beautiful.
