Emma, the owner and designer, is a GIA trained goldsmith with over 13 years of experience. She does everything in house, from designing to crafting to teaching. I bring the beading party directly to your home, vacation rental, beach house, or gathering space. Choose from colorful beads and create a bracelet, pair of earrings, or necklace while spending a relaxed, fun time together.

No jewelry-making experience is needed. I bring the materials, design boards, and everything needed to get everyone creating — and everyone leaves with a finished piece they made themselves. Depending on your project and pace, you may even have time to make a second piece.

🔥🪨 Fire Opal Finch — Field Note No. 001: The Investigation

Finch brought her mysterious orange-red stone home from Cape Lookout. Now comes the next step in field geology: identification. 🔎

When a geologist or mineralogist encounters an unknown specimen, color and appearance provide clues, but one characteristic alone usually isn’t enough to identify a mineral. Instead, we compare several physical properties and see where the evidence leads.

So Finch begins testing.

🔎 Light / translucency:
Held up to sunlight, the stone allows some light to pass through and seems to glow. It’s translucent, an important clue.

🔎 Hardness:
The specimen doesn’t scratch easily. That points toward a relatively hard material and helps eliminate softer possibilities. Chalcedony, like other forms of quartz, is about 6.5–7 on the Mohs hardness scale.

🔎 Luster & texture:
The stone has a smooth, slightly waxy-looking surface, a characteristic commonly seen in chalcedony.

🔎 Cleavage & fracture:
Finch doesn’t see flat cleavage planes. Chalcedony, like quartz, has no cleavage and typically breaks with a curved, conchoidal fracture.

Now she can put the clues together:

hard + translucent + waxy luster + no cleavage → chalcedony

But Finch can take the identification one step further.

Her specimen is translucent orange-red chalcedony — the coloration associated with a variety of chalcedony called:

🔥 CARNELIAN — SiO₂ 🔥

So that little orange stone that started this whole investigation has a name.

Specimen No. 001: Carnelian. 🧡🪨

And that’s one of the things Finch loves about geology: you don’t just guess what you found—you follow the evidence.

Tuesday’s mysterious orange find has officially made it into the field journal. 🔎🪨

Cape Lookout, Oregon — 8/18/26
Clear morning. Early morning tide. And one very interesting little treasure found near where a stream runs into the ocean.

Orange-red color.
Smooth and naturally polished.
Almost clear in places.
No visible break.

Agate family… maybe? 🤔

For now, that’s exactly what it is: a field observation and a question.

The specimen comes home next. Then the real investigation begins. 🔥
