Missing artwork in Gallup, landscape from the 1930s

⚠️ Missing New Deal Artwork Alert!

gallupARTS has verified that the location of a New Deal landscape painting by D. Paul Jones is no longer known. gallupARTS has obtained the attached image of the artwork (a digitized version of a slide photograph) from Gallup McKinley County Schools, to which the artwork had been loaned by the New Mexico Federal Art Project. gallupARTS has evidence of the painting being at Roosevelt Elementary in 2006, and has confirmed that GMCS has no more recent documentation on the painting. We are asking community members with knowledge of this painting to anonymously share what information they have using a Google Form: https://forms.gle/PLCGYNZQXg4P5eAF8

New Deal artworks are public artworks. They belong to all of us and should be made accessible to the public for everyone's benefit.

Reproduction sewing project based on an 1880s women’s shirt. This shirt has been made according to an 1880s sewing manual. The resulting style is functional as well as stylish. The pattern has a very tight arm scythe, and all the darts are worked into the neck line and center Front. Designed and sewn by Zefren Anderson.

It’s like Indian market with extra steps, some writing on moving up in the retail art market.

A handful of New Mexico-based artists—including Nikesha Breeze and Vicente Telles—are currently exhibiting in the 25th Biennale of Sydney. Santa Fe–based artist Lara Nickel is currently exhibiting in the 2nd annual Malta Biennale.⁠

While the invitation to exhibit internationally in a prestigious environment may sound like a dream come true, the logistics may be decidedly less-than-dreamy. ⁠

“I’m very grateful to be included, but the process of trying to find funding and arrange all the logistics has been extremely challenging,” says Nickel. “The Malta Biennale gives artists a certain amount of money and that helped me cover a lot of the shipping, but it doesn’t cover other expenses like airfare and lodging.”⁠

"While biennial artists hold events, sell work, and take other steps to cover costs above and beyond what they receive from a biennial itself, biennials may mount separate fundraising efforts to cover their own operations," Lynn Trimble reports. "And even after a biennial draws to a close, artists can incur related expenses such as shipping any unsold work back home."⁠

“There’s a strange bittersweetness to the whole thing. I’ve witnessed artists go through so much and put so much heart and love into their art,” reflects Breeze. “We need to change the whole vision of how biennials make this happen, so artists are pushed to the forefront.”⁠
