CRUD! The weekend is almost here and I haven’t done my social-media shoutout about where/ when I’ll be doing things yet- OOOOPS! 🫣
So- this Saturday, I’ll be set up with all sorts of shiny things at from 11am-5pm and then Sunday I’ll be hanging out with so many of my crafty friends at the annual spectacular Inman Eats and Crafts/ Maker’s Market. And the weather is supposed to be DELIGHTFUL this weekend so- see you there! 👏👏👏

Sometimes I question whether I should take the time to make simple things like my own earwires. Then I have a long-time client bring me someone else’s earrings to change out the earwires for mine, and I look at my handmade ones and I decide I’m doing the right thing by putting time into them. The cheeky little buggers on the right were hallmarked 925/ sterling but were just silver plated copper, which lost their plate very quickly and never have the strength to hold their shape. Making my own, I know they’re strong, well fabricated, and actually made from the proper materials. It’s the little things✨

As artists, it’s sometimes hard to find *just* the right thing to wear when you work with your hands all day, that fits your aesthetic and represents what you want it to. A sleek rose gold replacement wedding band for friend and studio neighbor was as simple as could be, and fit the brief perfectly ✨ Custom doesn’t have to be fancy and complicated- just has to be what you want. You get a sneak peek at a brand-new collage-in-progress with oh-so-many thoughtful, delightful, colorful little details too 🎨

Did you see the ring in my stories yesterday? Getting the main stone out was easy (and oh, SO satisfying) but getting the 18 little melee diamonds (and I mean little ~1.65mm) out takes a little more finesse so they don’t go pinging all over the studio and I never see them again. Some braver souls would melt the whole thing down and pick the it of the molten gold but I don’t like risking crazing or discoloring them so I’m making relief cuts in the rear and popping them out with a dental tool when I bend the cuts. finger guards are *perfect* for not getting poked by rough prong ends too✨

Three pairs of earrings made whole again after their respective siblings fell afoul to various misadventures. Necklace made whole again with a quick chain repair and a re-oxidization🌗
Many more happy years of wearing to you, MP!
If you have an earring needing to be made a whole pair again, LMK. It’s more common than you’d think 🫣

Question. I’d love to know your thoughts about diamonds- opinions, questions- all of it. What are your thought on lab vs. natural diamonds, for instance? I’m a fan of all the rainbow of salt and pepper diamonds but do love a good clear sparkler also (shown 2.5mm natural diamond). I used to use Swarovski cz’s but made the switch a while back to only using diamonds in my work. There’s also people who grow upon using diamonds set in silver. What say you? I personally love small diamonds in silver (and hate working in white gold🫠).

No studio today for obvious reasons but here’s a little look back at a surprise Valentine’s gift from husband to wife- their daughter’s name, Naomi. I was given some creative license with the brief but he really wanted some gold in there somewhere. Given the current cost of gold (OUCH) I was a little stumped with the best and most cost-effective approach until I remembered I had some 24k foil from before-times when gold was (relatively) affordable. I used an ancient Korean technique called keum-boo to fuse the gold to the silver after I had cut out the name from sheet silver. Pretty stoked with how this turned out🌟 Thanks, O, for trusting me on this one!

Taking a trip to the desert in a few days and wanted to take a piece of the ocean with me. I collected a pile of hand-picked lovelies on a trip to Narragansett last year with the intention of making all the things, and finally made a pair of studs today- more of these to come, and with more variations on the theme too. Rushed for time today so these’ll do for now🌵🌊
How do we feel about mis-matched pairs?

A repeat ring for a patient lady- previous iterations of this particular ring have, among other things, been run over by a car, if I remember correctly, and lost on vacation but it’s a sentimental piece so- a new one has been made! Representing her kiddos and husband, they’ll be represented on her hand again this week✨

Hey-o, friends! I’m not going to ask how it’s going because- well, we all know. Keep up the good things/ feed your souls/ take care of your neighbors and stay informed. It’s exhausting but it’s where we are at. Deep breaths. Speaking of deep breaths- as I’m doing a little winter re-org in the studio (partly due to the exciting move-in of a new studio-mate, .jewelry 👏) I found a hangtag from some wire I had purchased in August 2023. In relative timelines, not so long ago. I generally write the price per troy ounce on the back of the tag. Well- this particular wire cost $29.82 per troy ounce in 08/23. For giggles (sobs?) I looked up today’s cost. Exact same product today costs…wait for it…$135.36 per Troy ounce. That’s a 350% cost increase. In 29 months. Pardon me while I weep in the corner. BRB. I read recently that fine silver will be going upwards of $200/ Toz and gold will surge to $10,000😮‍💨
Cool beans, eh? I just don’t even know what else to say.
How are we feeling about alternate materials? Bronze, steel etc? Time to channel Ross…IYKYK.
