It belongs to a style of Renaissance and Baroque "monster jewelry," where craftsmen cleverly incorporated highly irregular, uniquely shaped baroque pearls (referred to historically as "monstrous pearls") to dictate the design of the entire piece.

n this specific ornament, the natural curves of a massive baroque pearl serve as the perfect, shimmering canvas for a lion's face.
