Esper imported high-end luxury automobiles to provide a bustling Lebanese merchant class and a European ex-pat community with the fastest, shiniest, and most luxurious vehicles in Beirut— at the time considered the Paris of the Middle East. His philosophy was simple; offer a well-made, unique product while providing impeccable service to every customer and you will build a loyal following across generations.

A single artisan spent 160 hours on this dial. More than 70 hand-split fragments of French rye straw, set in varying sizes and directions, trace the contours of the calavera. For the first time at Chopard, eggshell marquetry joins the straw, forming the eye sockets and teeth. Around the eyes, the shell fragments tighten towards the outer edges, leaving more black lacquer visible at the centre for a subtle gradient.

The finishing touches continue by hand: a gold moustache engraved with a satin-brushed motif and an L.U.Chopard logo in relief, and fine hand chasing that outlines the calavera before carrying across the bezel, caseband and crown.

Chopard’s tribute to Mexico’s Día de los Mu***os reaches its thirteenth edition, and this time it takes the form of one of the manufacture’s most accomplished timepieces: the L.U.C Full Strike minute repeater, certified by the Poinçon de Genève and awarded the Aiguille d’Or at the 2017 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. Edition 13 is a one-of-a-kind creation.

Crafted in 18-carat ethical rose gold, the 42.5mm case frames a dial depicting the calavera, the stylised skull at the heart of the Día de los Mu***os tradition. Marking a first for Chopard, eggshell marquetry is introduced alongside deep-blue straw marquetry. A single artisan spent 160 hours on the dial. More than 70 hand-split fragments of French rye straw trace the contours of the skull, while eggshell inlays form the eye sockets and teeth.

At the heart of the watch beats the hand-wound L.U.C Calibre 08.01-L, the first minute repeater movement developed entirely by Chopard. Its patented monobloc construction forms the watch glass and gongs from a single piece of sapphire, giving the chime exceptional purity and resonance. For this edition, the hammers, strike ratchet wheels bridge and repeater inertia governor drum receive a blue CVD treatment, a chromatic echo of the blue straw on the dial.

Presented on a hand-sewn cognac brown alligator strap with a hand-engraved rose gold deployant clasp, the L.U.C Full Strike ‘Día de los Mu***os’ Edition 13 brings together Chopard’s chiming expertise and the rare artistic crafts its artisans keep alive.

The Armin Strom Mirrored Force Resonance Zeitgeist 1665 3N reimagines one of watchmaking’s most intriguing mechanical phenomena through a combination of contemporary movement architecture and traditional finishing. Limited to 25 pieces worldwide, this manually wound resonance watch introduces a warm yellow-gold aesthetic to the manufacture’s distinctive twin-regulator construction.

The defining feature is the in-house ARF21_ZG calibre, which employs two independent regulating systems connected by Armin Strom’s patented resonance clutch. Inspired by Christiaan Huygens’ observations of synchronised pendulum clocks in 1665, the mechanism allows the two balance wheels to synchronise through physical resonance. A twin-seconds flyback mechanism adds practical functionality, allowing both seconds hands to reset simultaneously.

Gold takes centre stage across the movement, with the mainplate and bridges finished in a 3N yellow-gold-coloured PVD treatment. Their matte surfaces contrast with hand-bevelled and polished edges, black-polished screws, perlage and circular graining. The skeletonised mainplate opens the architecture around the resonance mechanism, creating the impression that the regulating systems are suspended within the movement.

A black, polished vernis laqué dial provides a dramatic backdrop, complemented by heat-blued stainless-steel hands manufactured and hand-finished by Armin Strom. The 43mm stainless-steel case is paired with a dark grey Alcantara strap featuring grey stitching.

Operating at 25,200 vibrations per hour, the ARF21_ZG calibre delivers an 80-hour power reserve from two independent barrels. As with every Armin Strom timepiece, the watch is assembled twice to ensure both functionality and precision.

Precision has always been central to Arnold & Son’s identity, rooted in the legacy of founder John Arnold with his historical marine chronometers. The DSTB Stop-Seconds brings this heritage into contemporary independent watchmaking, combining the manufacture’s signature deadbeat-seconds complication with a practical mechanism for setting the time to the exact second.

Short for Dial-Side True Beat, the DSTB places its mechanical spectacle front and centre. Rather than sweeping continuously, the slender, blued-steel seconds hand advances in distinct one-second jumps, driven by a mechanism displayed prominently across the dial.

The defining addition is a stop-seconds mechanism. Pulling out the crown halts the seconds hand, allowing the watch to be synchronised precisely with a reference time before restarting when the crown is pushed back in.

Limited to 18 pieces each, the DSTB Stop-Seconds comes in an 18-carat 5N red-gold case with a finely grained Cliff Grey dial, inspired by the cliffs of John Arnold’s native Cornwall, or in platinum with a finely grained Kingsand dial, whose warm, sand-like hue references the gilded brass main plates found in John Arnold’s historical movements.

Powering the watch is the self-winding A&S6303 calibre, offering a 55-hour power reserve and beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour. Visible through the sapphire case back, the movement features a 22-carat gold, openworked oscillating weight decorated with guilloché and bearing Arnold’s anchor emblem.

With its combination of historical inspiration, dial-side mechanics and precision-focused functionality, the DSTB Stop-Seconds is a compelling expression of Arnold & Son’s chronometric expertise.

It’s not often that we get to welcome an all-new collection from URWERK! The beginning of the next chapter of the brand, co-founders Martin Frei and Felix Baumgartner have entered the quantum realm, moving beyond the boundaries of the signature satellite hour complication. This is the UR-300 Time Quantum.

At its center, two perpendicular hour modules form a T-shaped configuration, carrying four rotating, three-sided hour prisms that collectively display all 12 hours. When the minute hand reaches the end of its scale, the entire assembly performs a coordinated transformation: the T-frame jumps forward and rotates 72 degrees, its crossbar and stem exchange positions, and the hour prisms rotate to reveal the next hour. This rapid reconfiguration evokes the interconnected behaviour of particles (a quantum leap) and an amazing mechanical event to watch on the wrist.

Driving the display is the automatic UR-30.01V calibre, equipped with URWERK’s patented Dual Flow Turbines to regulate winding. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, the movement delivers a 44-hour power reserve through a double mainspring barrel.

The UR-300 Time Quantum is housed in a Grade 5 titanium case measuring 45.2mm by 58.8mm, with a height of 18.25mm.

Available in two limited editions of 25 pieces each, in titanium or titanium with AlTiN treatment, the UR-300 Time Quantum pushes the boundaries of contemporary independent watchmaking through its distinctive combination of mechanical ingenuity and avant-garde design.

This pattern on the dial is more than a billion years old.

This is the natural crystalline structure of a meteorite, called the Widmanstätten pattern. These meteorites formed when molten metal inside an asteroid cooled incredibly slowly, allowing iron and nickel crystals to grow over millions of years.

To make a watch dial, the meteorite is sliced incredibly thin, polished, and then chemically etched to reveal that structure.
Here, the meteorite dial works particularly well with Ludovic Ballouard’s Upside Down. It’s a watch about perspective, about living in the present, with a dial made from something that predates all life on earth.

How do you turn a 72-hour power reserve into 8+ days?

Chopard found the answer by taking its foundational movement, the L.U.C Calibre 96, and essentially rethinking what was inside it.

Co-President Karl-Friedrich Scheufele had this idea: remove the micro-rotor on Cal. 96 and add two additional co-axial barrels in its place. This led to the brand’s second heavy-hitting movement in the L.U.C Quattro, arriving in the year 2000. A manual-wind, four barrel, sub-10mm in thickness wristwatch with massive 216 hour power reserve.

From Breguet to something never before seen: let’s talk watch hands.

Starting with the classic — Breguet hands are about as traditional as it gets, distinguished by their open, circular tips, often paired with finely tapered hands.

Dauphine hands are faceted and tapered with a distinctive triangular profile, typically featuring a sharp central ridge that catches the light. Dating back to the 1930s, these were very popular mid-century and a staple in modern watches as well.
Arrow hands, as the name suggests, feature a prominent arrow-shaped tip, designed for strong legibility and a bold appearance. Dating back to early 20th century aviation timepieces, the same legibility purpose finds its place in ultra-modern complicated indies now.

There’s also the rare arrival of new forms of hands. The Chronograph Flyback by Rexhep Rexhepi features a very unusual indented minute hand, something we’ve never seen before. Maybe this will be coined the “RR” hand in the future.
