Woodgrain rings

I recently got my first scroll saw, and I've been having a blast learning how to use it. This is what I did today, the second time I've ever used it. The fish and the piece below it are basswood, the spoon and the ring are from the same piece of curly maple. Now let's hope I can work that stuff after cutting it!

I've been preparing for a local wood carving show and competition in mid November. This is one of the pieces I'll be entering. It's a stylized elk carved from an applewood branch- one of the same branches that many of my rings have come from!

The carving show is from November 22-23rd, at the Pioneer Park Pavillion in Puyallup. If you can make it, it's a fantastic display of local (and not-so-local) talents. I'll also be doing a program on the 22nd on ring carving, and carving black walnut animals.

Here's a ring I recently did as a custom order. It was a size 7 black walnut, red garnet, and silver wire ring, very similar to one I've done before. Sadly the picture doesn't quite do it justice, this ring in full sunlight was fantastic.

Here's an update on the mountain landscape relief carving, and also a silly little giraffe that just came out of my knife unexpectedly. These things happen, and I love it when they do.

How was everyone's Easter weekend? Mine was great, I got some much needed yard work done, and did this little whale in black walnut. I tried a new technique to really bring out the colors in the piece, and I think worked well.
