On October 23, 2019, we customized and repadded this vintage King Super 20 saxophone. Almost seven years to the day, it found its way back to our bench and Lord only knows what adventures it’s had since! 🎷🔧

Sadly, the horn returned in rough shape. Many of the key corks and felts were missing or had been replaced with less-than-ideal materials. The biggest surprise, though, was the upper stack hinge rod and keys. Several keys had been shortened and needed extensions, and the hinge rod needed replacing.

So we got right to work!

🎥 The first video walks through removing the existing F #–G #/Bb regulation arm and fabricating a custom replacement with adjustment screws.

🎥 The second video shows how we made a replacement hinge rod.

Once the fabrication and fitting were complete, we replaced all the key corks and felts and carefully adjusted everything to bring this classic horn back to our standards and back to excellent playing condition!

Today’s a great day at The Band Shoppe it’s NEW TOOL DAY! 🎉 We just welcomed another amazing Omegasonics ultrasonic machine to help keep your instruments clean and playing their best! 🎷🎺

Our cleanings go well beyond a quick scrub and rinse. Each instrument goes through a thorough, multistep process: an initial rinse, a degreasing soak, a scrub and rinse, an acid descaling soak, another scrub and rinse, and finally, a trip through our ultrasonic cleaner!

Then it’s time for reassembly, including valve alignment, fresh water key corks, and up to 15 minutes of complimentary dent removal. All part of giving your horn the care it deserves! ✨

If your instrument hasn’t been cleaned for this school year, don’t wait! We’re already booking services through the holiday gig season, so get your horn on the schedule before your calendar fills up. 🎶

When parts aren’t available, what do you do? Around here, that means fabrication time! 🔧🎷

Norton springs are a unique style found on vintage Buescher saxophones. Instead of a traditional dovetail mounting, these springs use a threaded insert that screws into the post. Replacements aren’t always readily available, especially in the tiny size this old Big B needed so we made one ourselves!

Making threaded parts? No problem. Drilling a centered hole? Usually pretty straightforward. But when your drill bit is thinner than the lead in a mechanical pencil, the “clench factor” is REAL!

Luckily, everything turned out perfectly, and we’re ready for the final touches and adjustments to help keep this horn playing for another 80 years!

It’s Workbench Wednesday, and we’re playing a little guessing game! 🔧🎶

This vintage LeBlanc clarinet needed a whole lot of love and that’s exactly what it got during its spa stay at the shop! 🎶✨

After taking it completely apart, Lee buffed and polished every key, then thoroughly cleaned, oiled, and repolished the body. Next came dressing the tone holes and refitting the keys to ensure everything was tight and moving smoothly. After those steps were complete he began the installation of synthetic key felts and corks and installing and leveling a combination of cork, Master, and white leather pads.

The result? A well balanced clarinet that feels and sounds every bit as good as it looks!

Does your beloved instrument need some expert care? Our repair techs are ready to help! Drop it off anytime we’re open Monday–Friday, 12–8, and Saturday, 9–5—with no appointment needed and we will take it from there!

It was our pleasure and honor to sponsor the Piney Ridge Fun Run! 🐾 Cam & Vi, Lauren, and Lee had an absolute blast! From running and dancing to celebrating Spot’s birthday, soaking up the sunshine, and cooling off with popsicles, it was a perfect day! ☀️🏃🍧

Well, it’s official!! 🏆🎶 We’ve won Carroll’s Best for the FIFTH year in a row Best Music Store AND Best Music Lessons!

We’re incredibly grateful and humbled to receive both honors again. Our counter staff, repair technicians, and teachers pour their hearts into what they do, and these awards belong to them just as much as they belong to the shop. ❤️

It’s our honor and pleasure to be Carroll County’s go-to place for instruments, private lessons, and instrument repairs.
