In Focus. 5.33ct Gem.

Paraiba are among the most prized and gemstones in the world, famous for their electric, neon-like in colors ranging from to , and green. These unique hues are due to traces of (and sometimes manganese).

ORIGINS:

1. (Original Discovery – 1989):
• State of Paraíba, hence the name.
• Rare and small production; often under 1 carat.

2. (2000s):
• Much larger stones discovered here, with similar copper-rich composition.

3. :
• Also produces copper-bearing tourmalines with vivid colors.
• Nigerian stones can resemble the Brazilian material closely.

The term “Paraiba” is now used to describe any copper-bearing tourmaline, regardless of origin, though Brazilian stones still fetch the highest premiums.

VALUES

While Paraiba is the most valuable and sought after, stones from Brazil can reach upwards of $50,000–$100,000+ per carat, especially for fine qualities over 1 carat.

Stones from Mozambique/Nigeria are typically found in the $5,000–$30,000 per carat range, depending on quality.

NOTABLE SALES

• A 1.80 ct Brazilian Paraiba sold at Christie’s for over $50,000 per carat.
• A Paraiba tourmaline and diamond necklace by deGrisogono featured a 191.87 ct Paraiba and fetched millions at auction.
• A Paraiba tourmaline ring by Lorenz Baumer was sold by Sotheby’s for over $1.5 million, showing the market’s hunger for top-tier stones.

WHY THEY’RE SO VALUABLE

• Rarity: Copper-bearing tourmalines are extremely rare, especially Brazilian.
• Color: Unmatched, vibrant glow that appears to be lit from within.
• High Demand: Among collectors and high-end jewelry designers.
• Limited Supply: Brazilian mines are nearly depleted.
