A scientist spent 40 years talking to bacteria and just changed how the world grows food 🌱 Mariangela Hungria is a Brazilian microbiologist who studied soil microbes that pull nitrogen straight from the air and feed it to plant roots. Her work at Embrapa in Brazil turned this into biological treatments now used across tens of millions of hectares. Farmers using them are saving billions of dollars a year that used to go toward synthetic fertilizer 🌾
For most of her career almost nobody took soil bacteria seriously as a science. She kept going anyway. In 2025 she became the first Brazilian woman to win the World Food Prize, agriculture's highest honor ✨ It is a quiet reminder that some of the biggest fixes for how we feed the planet are invisible and already living in the ground beneath us.
