Taylor Swift’s Diamond has been described as old mine- It is a cushion, which could be somewhat interchangeable, but in this instance is NOT! Once upon a time I helped a popular price list correct photos and later an app which now shows old European brilliant on the round list and old mine on the fancy list. Look up old mine on the GIA website and you will find a stone that has rounded edges that could me to four corners AND IS SQUARE IN OUTLINE. Before we trend badly, understand that cutters from that era cut to save weight. The shapes are not computer designed as they are today and so variances were common. I had a dealer reach out to me today to find out whether his purchase of “lab grown” diamond stud earrings was worth the cost. To be fair, I have always believed that there was a place in our world for travel jewelry, low cost alternatives and engagement stone in the desired mounting which would allow for a honeymoon or wedding expenses when a natural stone of quality can be upgraded later. The earth mined vs. lab grown argument is based upon fallacies that diminish the credibility of anyone who is making a greater profit than warranted in our industry. I make my bigger profits ONLY when I recut, submit to a lab or purchase from someone who does not have the time or trust for me to do what I suggest to them- AT COST. I am now buying lab grown at a discount below 99 back of Rap on near colorless SI1+ stones (fancy shapes are generally a little more than rounds). If you are engaged in my industry BE ETHICAL! It affects all of us! Charge a reasonable markup OR provide lifetime replacements if you have an inventory bought at higher pricing!
