One of the most fascinating stories about tanzanite is how it was discovered.

According to popular accounts, local Maasai herders in Tanzania noticed vivid blue crystals scattered across the ground after lightning fires swept through the area near Mount Kilimanjaro in the 1960s. The heat is believed to have transformed naturally brown zoisite crystals into the striking blue-violet gemstone we now know as tanzanite.
