Very interesting and touching story.

It was built like a kingdom in diamonds, but it vanished so completely that even its brilliance became a mystery for half a century

In the early 20th century, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala stood among the most flamboyant rulers of British India, known for a lifestyle that blended political authority with extraordinary display. As ruler of the princely state of Patiala from 1900 to 1938, he transformed royal patronage into a global statement of wealth, commissioning works that blurred the line between jewelry and monument.

Among his most legendary commissions was the Patiala Necklace, created in 1928 by Cartier in Paris. This extraordinary piece was constructed with nearly 1,000 carats of diamonds arranged across five cascading rows, incorporating 2,930 individual stones. At its heart lay Burmese rubies and a massive 234.65-carat yellow diamond known as the De Beers Diamond, making it one of the most ambitious jewelry creations ever produced.

The necklace was not merely decorativeโ€”it was architectural in scale, designed to sit like a collar of light and power around the wearer. Its structure reflected the Maharajaโ€™s persona: bold, commanding, and unapologetically grand. In portraits from the era, he is often seen adorned in layered diamond necklaces and ceremonial regalia that resemble armor, reinforcing his image as both ruler and spectacle.

Yet despite its magnificence, the necklaceโ€™s history took a dramatic turn. Around 1948, after the decline of princely power in India, the piece disappeared from the Patiala treasury, vanishing into obscurity. For decades, it was believed lost forever, existing only in photographs and memory as a symbol of vanished royal excess.

In 1998, parts of the original framework resurfaced in London, allowing Cartier to later undertake a careful restoration. Today, the Patiala Necklace survives as both a reconstructed masterpiece and a fragment of lost imperial Indiaโ€”an object where craftsmanship, colonial history, and royal ambition intersect in a single breathtaking creation, still echoing the grandeur of the man who once ordered it into existence.

We stand united in remembrance and gratitude for our fallen heroes, honoring their ultimate sacrifice.

Our office will be closed on Monday, May 25th, in observance of Memorial Day, as we reflect on the courage and selflessness that has shaped our nation.
