Jewelry making was long considered a purely male profession. But today, the industry is full of women. Designers, technicians, 3D modelers, gemologists. Some work for major houses like Cartier or Tiffany & Co., while others build their own brands from scratch.

How can you tell if an ear cuff will fit you if you can’t try it on?

This is probably the biggest question people have when buying this kind of jewelry online. How does it stay on? Everyone’s ears are different… Will it fit? Will it fall off? Will it hurt? Is it even possible to choose the right ear cuff without trying it on?

The answer is yes — and it’s actually pretty simple.

First, let’s understand how an ear cuff stays in place. Imagine hugging a big tree. 🌳 Now imagine the tree is the cartilage of your ear, and your arms are the ear cuff. That’s exactly how a cuff “hugs” your ear — following its natural shape without squeezing it.

And the better it matches the shape of your ear, the more comfortable it will feel. That’s why we design our cuffs in an oval shape rather than a round one. An oval follows the natural curve of the cartilage much better — and that makes it more comfortable to wear.

Luckily, about 95% of people have this kind of well-defined “hug-friendly” oval cartilage. For the remaining 5%, that little fold isn’t very pronounced — or isn’t there at all — and then the cuff simply has nothing to hold onto.

So how do you figure out which group you’re in?

❗ Just take a photo of your ear and compare it to the images below.

And keep in mind — even your own left and right ears can be slightly different!

👂🏻 In the first example, the transition between the inner and outer part of the ear is sharp and clearly defined. The cartilage is pronounced — a cuff will sit securely.

👂🏻 In the second example, the transition is much smoother. If your ear looks like this, unfortunately a cartilage cuff may not stay in place. But that just makes you unique 😉 And don’t worry — this isn’t the only type of ear cuff design out there. There are other constructions that may work perfectly for you. I’ll write about those soon.
