We do not arrive at your house with a plan for it.

Before we organize anything we ask a lot of questions, because a system that does not match the people using it will not survive the month.

How do you naturally group your belongings? Do you need to see things, or do you need them put away? And what will you realistically do to maintain it, not on a good day, but on a Tuesday when everybody is tired?

A beautifully labeled, color coordinated system you cannot maintain is not a successful organizing system. The one you will actually use is.

Three bins in a bathroom. One for t-shirts, one for bras, one for underwear. The t-shirts were not folded.

She didn't care. And neither did we.

She had built a simple system that worked for her, and our job was not to replace it with something prettier or more conventional. It was to support the system that was already working and to build upon that.

Do your t-shirts really need to be file folded?

Most people know Marie Kondo's method, folding shirts so they stand upright in a drawer rather than stacking. It is a genuinely good system. You can see every shirt at once.

But if you are never going to fold that way, I do not want to build it for you. That is adding stress and creating a system that is ready to fail on day one.

So we ask you questions. How do you fold your t-shirts? Do you even fold them? Do you want them separated by category, or all together and sorted by color? This is your closet. However you want it, we will do it.

Some people are incredibly specific, down to categories of socks. Others are perfectly happy throwing every pair into one drawer. Neither person is wrong.

He owned more than ninety pairs of underwear, and that was the laundry problem.

Years ago I worked with a couple who both had ADHD. Laundry had gone from a hamper or two to mountains, and they could not work out why they never got on top of it.

Then one of them mentioned, almost in passing, how much he owned. He never actually had to do laundry. There was always something clean, so a chore that was easy to put off got put off again and again, until what was waiting had become overwhelming.

The solution was not a better laundry system. It was less underwear.

Before you buy another bin, ask: do I need a better way to organize this, or do I simply have too much to organize?

We don't organize clutter.

It is tempting to think getting organized starts with bins and drawer dividers. It doesn't. Before we organize anything, we edit.

We take everything out, group like items together, and help you see what you actually own. That is usually where the surprises begin. Five black sweaters. Seven spatulas. Twenty coffee mugs when you regularly use six.

Only then do we organize what is left. Otherwise we are just finding prettier ways to store things you don't need, and that is not organization. That is organized clutter.
