Ruby has accumulated a host of legends over the centuries. People in India believed that rubies enabled their owners to live in peace with their enemies. In Burma (a ruby source since at least 600 AD—now called Myanmar), warriors possessed rubies to make them invincible in battle. However, it wasn’t enough to just wear the rubies. They had to insert them into their flesh and make them part of their bodies.

The name ruby comes from the Latin word ruber, which means “red.” The glowing red of ruby suggested an inextinguishable flame burning in the stone, even shining through clothing and able to boil water.

Ruby has been called the most precious of the 12 stones created by God.

Ruby retained its importance with the birth of the western world and became one of the most sought-after gems of European royalty and the upper classes. Many medieval Europeans wore rubies to guarantee health, wealth, wisdom, and success in love.

A vibrant red oval natural ruby sits at the center of this 18k white gold cocktail ring, secured by four subtle prongs. The striking center stone is surrounded by a textured halo of round white natural diamonds that extend down the shoulders alongside sleek baguette cuts. This intricate arrangement creates a bold and classic profile.

Diamonds have long been prized for three extraordinary qualities: rarity, brilliance and durability. Their unmatched hardness — making them the toughest natural material on Earth — is one reason they have become the ultimate symbol of lasting love and commitment. But diamonds possess another remarkable trait that is far less familiar to jewelry lovers: they are exceptionally efficient at transferring heat. That lesser-known characteristic is helping to solve one of artificial intelligence's biggest challenges. Check out our blog for the full story...

While the broader garnet family has been used in jewelry since the Bronze Age, rhodolite garnet is a distinctly modern discovery. It was first discovered in the 1890s by American mineralogist William Earl Hidden in the Cowee Valley of Macon County, North Carolina.

Originally mistaken for almandine, the stones were thoroughly analyzed by Hidden and his colleague Dr. J.H. Pratt. In 1898, they published their findings, confirming the gem was a unique hybrid of pyrope and almandine. The Name Origin: Hidden and Pratt coined the name rhodolite, inspired by the Greek word rhodon, meaning "rose-like" or "rose-colored". This references the stone's signature raspberry-red and purplish-pink hues, which also reminded many of the blossoms on the local rhododendron plants. While the original North Carolina deposits were historically important and quickly depleted, today's top-quality rhodolite garnets are primarily sourced from the "Mozambique Belt" in Africa (including Tanzania and Mozambique), as well as India, Sri Lanka, and Brazil.

A rhodilite oval garnet anchors this vintage-inspired pendant, surrounded by a classic natural diamond halo. The ornate bail features intricate milgrain detailing and additional diamond accents that draw the eye downward to the center stone. Crafted in 14k rose and white gold, the setting provides a rich, contrasting backdrop for this stunning gemstone.

This unique piece can be found in our estate section along with many other gorgeous keepsakes!

For generations, engagement ring shoppers gravitated toward classic white diamonds or richly colored gemstones displaying a single, uniform hue. Today, however, a growing number of Gen Z and Millennial couples are embracing a gemstone that celebrates their colorful individuality in a completely different way: the parti sapphire. A June bride is a traditional term for a woman who gets married in the month of June. It symbolizes the enduring popularity of June as the start of the western wedding season, representing romance, good fortune, and new beginnings.

The month of June is named after Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage, family, and childbirth. Ancient Romans believed that couples who married during her month would be blessed with lifelong happiness and prosperity.

Before modern transportation, the warm weather in late spring and early summer made travel by horse and buggy far easier than in the winter months. Historically, people bathed infrequently. Marrying in late spring meant people could finally bathe, and brides carried strong-smelling bouquets to mask unhygienic body odors.

In historical farming communities, a June wedding meant a winter pregnancy. This allowed the mother to recover by spring, freeing her up to help with the heavy lifting during the fall harvest.

Today, the idea is largely kept alive by cultural tradition and the wedding industry. Couples still gravitate toward the month due to the appealing summer weather, school schedules, and the romance associated with the phrase.

This striking Valina 2 ct oval semi-mount anchors this unique 14k yellow gold engagement ring, complemented by a delicate pear-shaped and round natural diamond side stones. The design features a beautifully contoured accent band with a sweeping row of pavé-set diamonds that perfectly frame the center setting.

We have a large selection of semi-mounts in stock. Choose your semi-mount then your stone shape and size. We can make it yours!

Historically, natural pearls have been found around the globe, from the Persian Gulf, Indian Ocean and Gulf of Mannar near Sri Lanka to French Polynesia, China, Japan, Australia, the rivers of Europe and even the Tennessee River basin. As we celebrate June's birthstone, let's take a closer look at the Smithsonian's Baja Pearl Butterfly, a brooch adorned with exceptionally rare natural pearls gathered over three decades from the Sea of Cortez, also known as the Gulf of California.
