JACQUES P. JACKSON on MASS HYSTERIA: Night of 100 Wombs
My Art practice led me to create a mosaic phallus entitled "Vibrainium." Soon after, one of my collectors asked, "When are you going to make it's counterpart?"
She got me thinking. Because my reality was, I didn't want my art to be about s*x.
Talking to a lady friend of mine, she informed me that she had just had a hysterectomy. But she said to me that they left her cervix in place. I didn't flinch, I just let the conversation go on. But I realized that at age 45, I had no idea of what a cervix was nor what it did.
I called up my nurse in labor friend and asked her. She, in turn, made it a homework assignment for me to find out! Ugh! So I began my Google search for those answers, and it really took some digging. But as I was digging, I was learning more and more about this fascinating organ, the uterus.
In this search, I found my reason to create Art featuring the uterus. I consider myself a smart guy, and if I could be so ignorant about this reproductive organ, surely millions of other Americans are too.
There is so much I could say about the uterus and how its health affects us all. But I will continue to create Art that gets those conversations started.
